Prepping Your Garden with Primroses

Gardeners are setting their sights on spring blooms and Woodbury Farm Market is here to help.

This winter has been pretty tough for those looking to jump-start their gardening, Stephanie Vorio of Woodbury Farm Market said. Some years, people can get into the ground in March but this year, Vorio theorizes digging in the dirt may not happen until April.

"We're having winter still," she said. "A lot of people start seeds indoors but it's even still a bit premature for that."

Because people start hankering for hyacinths around this time, Vorio said they decorate their indoor spaces with fresh blooms, until the soil is ready for digging.

"It cheers it up," she said. "Winter's been too long."

Vorio pointed to the hyacinths, mini daffodils and primroses.

"You enjoy them indoors and then when they fade, you plant them outside," she said. "They'll come up next year."

With another wintry mix potentially headed our way, bringing a pop of floral color into the house may help weather the storm. Vorio said there's one very simple reason why flowers are essential.

"Primroses will make you happy," she said.
