Region 14 Board of Ed Candidate: Tom Arras

Tom Arras, Woodbury

One of Region 14's biggest priorities is straightening out plans for all the district buildings, Tom Arras said.

"It's nice to want to do a lot of things but you have to address what you need first," he said.

Arras said that in Region 14, he sees a lot of spending based on passion and feels building maintenance should be part of a maintenance budget.

Communication is Key

Arras said he has always been interested in government and taxes.

"It always baffled me how little people pay attention," he said.

At recent meetings detailing Nonnewaug's building project, Arras said turnout was low.

"I fault both the Board of Education and the towns for not making people more aware," he said. "I am a firm believer in educating people. If you don't tell them, you're not educating them."

Arras expressed concern over what costs Bethlehem and Woodbury residents could potentially incur when it comes to the bonding of the Nonnewaug High School building renovations.

A referendum on the Nonnewaug High School Building Project will take place from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 18. He said he feels the figure is misrepresented and people need to be aware of exactly what's happening financially.

If elected, Arras said he will bring a strong business sense to the board.
"I'm better equipped by my character to ask questions," he said.
