Senator Berthel Receives GOP Nod for Fourth Term

May 20, 2020

Republican delegates on Monday night said they want State Senator Eric C. Berthel to continue his work serving the 32nd Senate District representing Bethlehem, Bridgewater, Middlebury, Oxford, Roxbury, Seymour, Southbury, Washington, Watertown and Woodbury.

The delegates at the virtual convention made their nomination of Berthel unanimous, making his campaign for a fourth term official.

“Connecticut will face significant financial challenges in the post-COVID19 economy for the foreseeable future, problems intensified by the legislature’s restrictive and hostile attitude toward employers and businesses—the people our state needs to help turn around the economy,” Berthel said. “I’d like to continue to bring common sense to the discussion on these issues and work toward solutions that stabilize government finances, that are respectful to the taxpayers, while creating an environment where business owners can recover, thrive and create jobs. The voice of common sense is arguably the loudest and most important in the legislature.”

Berthel was elected to his first two-year term in November, 2014.

As a state lawmaker, Berthel has received accolades from constituents appreciative of his efforts at community outreach, including regular local office hours where he briefs residents about a wide range of legislative issues. He has voted against state budgets that exceeded the state’s constitutional spending cap, helped minority party Republicans offer alternative budget plans without tax hikes, and supported legislation aimed at helping small businesses.

“Nearly every day I talk to residents who are increasingly frustrated with our state’s direction,” he said, “I’m honored that so many of them have put their faith in me and that they’ve chosen me to represent their values and vision for the state is truly humbling.”

Berthel is the ranking member of the Banks Committee and the Education Committee. He serves on the Veteran’s Affairs Committee and is the co-chair of the Legislative Internship Committee.
