Then And Now At Quassy Amusements

The original act included ringing bells, clattering of tambourines and other noises from within the mystical cabinet.

From Quassy: Jim and Sandy Sisti, the magic and comedy couple who are conjuring up good times for the 16th consecutive year at Quassy Amusement & Waterpark in Middlebury, Conn., pulled something historic out of their bag of tricks for the park’s 2018 presentation. The Spirit Cabinet Illusion, which dates back to 1854, was created by brothers Ira and William Davenport and they took their unique act on the road, claiming they could communicate with ghostly spirits. The original act included ringing bells, clattering of tambourines and other noises from within the mystical cabinet. Other great magicians adopted their own versions of the illusion, including legends Harry Kellar and Howard Thurston.

Jim and Sandy have put a family-friendly twist on The Spirit Cabinet Illusion as the closing act in their 20-minute show. Shown in the side-by-side sepia tone comparison photo are Howard Thurston (left, in an undated picture) and Jim Sisti (Jim’s photo taken Sunday at the park’s Carousel Theatre stage).

Quassy guests can enjoy seeing the Beacon Falls, Conn., couple next weekend with their full summer show schedule starting June 26.
