Two Westover Seniors Win National Poetry Honors

Middlebury, Connecticut – Two Westover School seniors – Charlotte Iwasaki of Southbury and Kira Hunter of New Jersey – have been awarded Silver Medals for Poetry at the National level of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Iwasaki received her award for her poem “Angel.” Hunter was honored for three poems: “Killer Clowns,” “Blind Tourists at Musee Rodin,” and “Aya Glady.”The two were among eight Westover students who had earlier received recognition on the regional level of the Scholastic Writing Awards program. Both Iwasaki and Hunter had received Gold Key recognition for their poetry on the regional level, along with Hannah Hudson, a senior from Southbury, and Joscelyn Norris, a sophomore from Roxbury. Students receiving Gold Key recognition at the regional level were considered for Scholastic Writing Awards on the national level.

Two Westover students had received Silver Key Awards on the regional for their poetry: Anna Chahuneau, a senior from Paris, France; and Nadia Gribkova, a senior from Moscow, Russia. Two other students received Honorable Mentions on the regional level: Lauren Danielowski, a senior from Woodbury for her poetry; and Min Ju Shin, a junior from Seoul, Korea, for an essay.

Iwasaki was one of seven students from Connecticut to receive recognition at the National level for their poetry; one received a gold medal and six received silver medals. Hunter was one of 15 students from New Jersey to be honored on the National level for their poetry; four received gold medals and 11 were presented silver medals.

Westover is a selective boarding and day school in Middlebury, Connecticut, with 205 students in grades 9-12 from 17 states and 20 countries. The School offers its students more than 20 Advanced Placement courses as well as signature programs in science, engineering, art history, and music.
