Whiz Kid: Carolyn Michener

Michener is a standout student both in and out of the classroom.

When she was a freshman Carolyn Michener joined “Team Beta”, the Robotics Team at Nonnewaug High School. She joined because she felt an opportunity to help build the club’s electric car was just too good to pass up.

Two years later, Carolyn continues with Nonnewaug’s Team Beta – a team that builds and competes with a new robot every year -- where she is the acting Secretary. Michener also spreads her enthusiasm for all things electronic as a mentor for the Beetlebots, a Lego League at Woodbury Middle School. She has helped the younger generation team of ten kids with competitions and is guiding their future interest in electronics, engineering, mechanical design and computer programming.

Along with her role in Team Beta, Carolyn sits on the Junior Class Council, is a member of the Leo Club (a Junior Lion’s Club), plays unified track and basketball, is a member of the National Honor Society and is the goalie for the Chief’s Field Hockey team.

“Carolyn is just a great kid,” says Team Beta Adviser and Chemistry teacher Melissa Yard. “I work with her not only on Team Beta, but also as a student in my AP Chemistry class.  She's enthusiastic, hardworking, organized, and just smart!  As a part of Team Beta she runs all of our awards submissions and is currently finishing up the drive train on our robot, which will ship on February 22.  The team would be lost without her.”

With a desire to go into Speech Pathology, Carolyn dreams of using her love and knowledge of electronics to one day help kids by designing a tool for those struggling with speech impediments.
