The Vero at Newark Brings Generations Together for Second Annual Day of Service

Newark, DE - The Vero at Newark, a Juniper Community, recently hosted its Second Annual Bridging Generations: A Day of Service, bringing together residents, students from Delcastle Technical High School, and community partners for a day focused on service, connection, and giving back.

The intergenerational event highlighted the power of collaboration between youth and older adults through a series of hands-on community impact projects. Delcastle students worked side by side with residents to assemble care packages for Friendship House and Sunday Breakfast Mission, providing essential items to individuals and families in need throughout the area.

Participants also created festive candy cane graham treats to thank local first responders for their dedication during the holiday season. In addition, SKILLSUSA student leaders partnered with residents to assemble mental health support kits for Warriors Helping Warriors, offering encouragement and wellness resources to local veterans.

Residents of The Vero shared how meaningful the experience was to witness students leading with compassion and purpose. “I thoroughly enjoyed working with the students. It is nice to see the next generation stepping up and being the next leaders of the future,” said Edna Haywood, a resident of The Vero. Fellow resident Rosemary Shannon added, “This event was a great start to the holiday season.”

Students echoed those sentiments, emphasizing the lasting impact of service across generations. Annia Medina, Class of 2026 President of the Student Council, shared, “This event is not only about volunteering, but also an opportunity to show that giving back has no age limit. You can still make a difference and make someone’s day. Though I am about to graduate, I would like to come back and help continue this tradition with Delcastle and The Vero, as this event is truly meaningful and impactful.”

Tiana Sirmans, a Class of 2028 member of the Student Council Executive Board, reflected on the collaborative spirit of the day, saying, “This day has been amazing and just shows that when generations come together, service becomes a legacy.”

Now in its second year, Bridging Generations continues to strengthen intergenerational bonds by combining the energy and compassion of students with the wisdom and generosity of residents. The Vero at Newark expressed gratitude to Delcastle Technical High School, participating residents, and community partners for making the day of service a continued success.
