Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki and Chief of Police Robert J. Tracy today announced the return of the Wilmington Police Department’s Learn to Ride bicycle training program, a popular community initiative that has been suspended since last year due to COVID-19. A kick-off event was held yesterday at the Chase Fieldhouse, which included the donation of bicycles to 15 City youth by JPMorgan Chase.
The WPD Learn to Ride program, held monthly, involves police officers providing safety lessons for children learning how to ride a bicycle. The free program is hosted in the gymnasium of the Police Athletic League of Wilmington, at 3707 North Market Street.
“We are excited to announce the return of this great program, which helps to build upon the relationships our police officers have with youth in the neighborhoods they serve,” said Chief Tracy. “We also appreciate the support of JPMorgan Chase, and the donation of bicycles and helmets to young Wilmingtonians.”
“I congratulate the Chief for re-starting this popular bike program and I express the City’s appreciation to JPMorgan Chase for once again being an outstanding community partner,” said Mayor Purzycki. “Bike riding and bike safety are good ways for young people and police officers to interact. We need to do more of anything and everything that brings us together.”
“At JPMorgan Chase we are proud to have the opportunity in supporting the WPD Learn to Ride program. This program, along with others in Wilmington, are examples of how our community comes together at both a grassroots and personal level,” said Don Mell, Site Lead for the Delaware market for Chase.
