106-Year-Old Woman Dances for Joy After Meeting Obama
Virginia McLaurin said she never thought she'd ever see a black president.
A 106-year-old woman danced for joy after meeting President Obama for the first time.
In video posted on the White House’s Facebook page, 106-year-old Virginia McLaurin is seen reacting with glee upon seeing Obama as he approaches her with his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama.
“It’s an honor, it’s an honor,” McLaurin said upon shaking his hand. Soon after, she can’t help but start dancing, prompting the president to jokingly ask her to slow down and the First Lady to remark, “I want to be like you when I grow up.”

The trio begins dancing together as Obama asks her what her secret is.
“I thought I would never live to get in the White House, and I tell you I am so happy,” she said. “A black president, a black wife, and I’m here to celebrate black history.”

The meeting happened because McLaurin began a social media campaign in 2014 to meet the First Couple, according to CNN.
She filmed a YouTube video and launched a petition for the meeting at the White House website.
“I remember the times before President Hoover. I remember when we didn’t have any electricity. I had a kerosene lamp. I remember the first car model Ford,” she wrote. “I didn’t think I would live to see a Colored President because I was born in the South and didn’t think it would happen.”
