Georgetown Business Expands to Manhattan

Georgetown's own Sweetgreen sets its sights on New York.

Sweetgreen, the small chain of salad shops that started with a store in Georgetown, will open its 20th store and its first in New York mid-July.

The chain was founded in 2007 by three Georgetown University students — Nicolas Jammet, Jonathan Neman and Nathaniel Ru — as part of a senior year project.

Their expansion into New York at the NoMad Hotel was featured in an article in the New York Times:

“The three of us are first-generation immigrants, and our fathers are all entrepreneurs,” Mr. Jammet said in a conversation with his partners at the NoMad. “So we identified a problem, which was there was no place healthy to eat in D.C. It was a food desert. Dean & DeLuca was the only place.” He added, “So we said, ‘Let’s write a business plan.’ ”
