Around Town: Green Space Gives Georgetown an Organic, Eco-Friendly Option
The only eco-friendly plant and flower shop in the area, Green Space has a small selection, but offers customers socially just and sustainable plants--without pesticides.
With Valentine's Day this Monday, florists are enjoying one of their busiest weekends of the year, scrambling to meet orders and deliver perfect arrangements.
But for Green Space owner Peter Dickens, business is about more than how arrangements look. Dickens owns the only eco-friendly, socially conscious, organic plant and flower shop in Georgetown.
"Our plants are good for human health," said Dickens. "They naturally purify the air indoors and are organic so they don't have pesticides. A lot of people don't realize that most cut flowers are grown with lots of pesticides, which are dangerous and bad for human health."

For traditional bouquets other flower shops offer much more diverse selections, but if you're open to a less traditional option, Green Space has a variety of plants and flowers packaged in recycled, biodegradable materials.
"Plants also last a lot longer than cut flowers," said assistant Shaun Schroth, explaining why he thinks plants are a unique gift. "You're giving someone something long lasting that shows you're intent to have a commitment."
