Dyslexia Petition to Congress Needs Just 100 More Electronic Signatures
Please Sign the Petition!
The Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity is active in promoting reform to the standardized tests in public schools which are inherently unfair to dyslexic students who experience trouble decoding text. A broader array of accomodations, such as reading the content to the dyslexic student outloud, would represent a more valid measure of their intelligence and make them more competitive on high-stakes tests.
I can speak as a classroom educator on this issue and say that the current testing regime is harming some young dyslexic students and it needs to change. It damages them academically and emotionally as they begin to feel inferior to their classmates and bad about themselves. Elementary education needs to be about positive outcomes for each student which they can build upon as their life proceeds, not identifying them at such a young age as "below basic" or "basic."
Our country's education model is outdated in many ways, but lack of accomodations for dyslexic students is one of its most egregious abuses. Please consider signing the petition and putting the Yale Center in a better position to drive reform.
