 a discussion of the enigmatic water spirits of East Slavic countries, 
with folklorist Philippa Rappoport of George Washington University.&nbsp;
Be careful out there. According to Slavic folklore, in the late 
spring the rusalki, an East Slavic version of mermaids, emerge from 
lakes and streams to water crops and to claim lives. They're mostly 
beautiful, with wild hair and blazing eyes, and they’re more than happy 
to drag smitten young men to watery graves.
Join Philippa Rappoport, an expert on Slavic folklore and rituals, 
for a discussion of the water spirits of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia and
 the traditions centered around them. She'll describe how rusalki were 
both revered and feared by people who would sing songs in their honor 
while carrying protective charms.&nbsp;
You'll learn how East Slavic mermaid lore permeated wedding rituals 
and parades, inspired the construction of effigies, and reflected 
beliefs about women that, throughout the world, have translated into a 
lot of concern over how women wear their hair and cover their heads.
Philippa has wowed crowds with fascinating talks on East Slavic 
nature spirits and folktales related to the underworld and winter. Her

 on word of saviors in religion and science fiction, with Peter Herman, 
former lecturer in theology and religious studies at Marymount 
University and scholar of religious and social themes in sci fi.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Dune: Part Three is scheduled for release in December, and trailers for the epic space opera film have fans of the Dune
 franchise longing for it like visitors to its desert planet Arrakis 
long for water. Based on the second volume of renowned science fiction 
novelist Frank Herbert's Dune saga, the movie depicts the 
internal and external conflicts of protagonist Paul Atreides, an emperor
 treated by others as a messiah while being depicted as an antihero.
The film will raise intriguing questions related to the presence of 
redeeming figures, or messiahs, throughout both science fiction and 
religious texts. Among them: What exactly do we mean by the term 
“messiah”? Why have many religious traditions looked for a redeemer to 
emerge? What happens if the messiah gets it all wrong?&nbsp;
Explore such questions—and prepare yourself to enjoy the upcoming Dune
 film at a much deeper level—with Dr. Peter Herman, who has given 
several excellent, thought-provoking Profs and Pints talks on the Dune franchise.
To center Dune in the discussion, we’ll look at the 
character of Paul Atriedes as a ruler who has launched a jihad across 
known space to reconquer it. His prescient visions show him that 
although the spread of religious war is not optimal, neither is it the 
worst potential future for humanity, and he allows excess and violence 
to continue in his name out of a conviction that it’s for the greater 
good. Throughout the book on which the upcoming film is based, Atriedes 
struggles with his followers' desire to view him as a divine figure.
Dr. Herman, a trained theologian, will set such themes in the broader
 context of religious studies by discussing messianic figures across 
various religious traditions. Among them, Christianity names Jesus of 
Nazareth as the messiah, but he is hardly the first person in the 
canonical Bible given that title. Mainstream Judaism does not anticipate
 any similar, deified figure descending from heaven, but messianic 
strains of Judaism have looked for the arrival of a political liberator.
 Islam, from which Frank Herbert borrowed terms applied to Paul 
Atriedes, contains reference to someone serving not as a redeemer but as
 a heavenly guide. All branches of Buddhism situate within each new age 
of their cyclical cosmology a Buddha-yet-to-come.
We’ll look at the human tendency in confusing times to seek out 
direct, uncomplicated answers and to embrace messianism as part of 
apocalypticism, which foretells a straightforward sorting process in 
which believers, as good people, see reward while their enemies, as bad 
people, see punishment.&nbsp;
Dune fans will feel rewarded for coming to this talk.

Have you ever wondered how and why the impressionist painted the way they did?&nbsp;
Would you like to learn to paint like an impressionist yourself?
Around the turn of the 20th century, there were dramatic changes in the art world. Where previous generations of artists once favored rigid techniques and spending thousands of hours in studios glazing hundreds of layers of paint, now artists aspired to create more immediate paintings and tried to more directly capture the world they saw.
This class, meant for students at all skill levels, will start from the ground up teaching students how to mix colors like the impressionists and introduce students to various techniques that evolved in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
All supplies are included with the class as students will be encouraged to try out different paints, brushes, and other painting materials throughout the class.&nbsp;

Collage is one of the most freewheeling and immediately satisfying art forms — all you need is paper, scissors, and a willingness to see what happens when things come together in unexpected ways. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore collage as a serious artistic medium, building layered compositions from found and personal materials. You’ll leave with one or more finished pieces and a set of techniques you can keep exploring on your own. Come with whatever inspires you — vintage maps, sheet music, decorative papers, magazine clippings, old drawings, unfinished artwork, wrapping paper, book pages. The more varied your materials, the more surprising your results. Not sure what to bring? Don’t worry — a generous selection of papers, maps, and printed materials will be provided. We’ll work on prepared surfaces and use acrylic medium for adhesion, with additional textures and embellishments available to add depth and dimension to your work. Beautiful Scraps: A Collage Workshop with Clare Winslow

<a href="https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Profs and Pints DC</a> presents: “Maintain Your Brain,” a
 research-based guide to nurturing your brain and staying sharp as you 
age, with Dr. Majid Fotuhi, adjunct professor of neuroscience at Johns 
Hopkins University’s Mind/Brain Institute and author of The Invincible Brain.
Most people assume memory loss is inevitable with age, but that’s not
 the case. Dramatic leaps forward in brain research over the past decade
 have produced a host of both surprising and actionable findings related
 to brain health and resilience.
If you are concerned about your brain’s long-term health or looking 
after aging parents, you won’t want to miss this upcoming Profs and 
Pints talk. The speaker, Dr. Majid Fotuhi, is a neurologist and 
neuroscientist who has spent four decades studying Alzheimer's disease, 
memory, and the science of brain resilience. He developed a 12-week 
clinical program that has helped hundreds of patients improve on 
objective cognitive tests and experience MRI-confirmed increases in the 
volume of their hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for 
memory and learning.
You’ll learn how the brain has a remarkable ability to grow new 
connections, increase in volume, and recover from years of neglect—a 
property called neuroplasticity. At the same time, even a single night 
of poor sleep causes a measurable buildup in the brain of amyloid, the 
protein linked to Alzheimer's.
Dr. Fotuhi will describe how our understanding of neuroplasticity has
 greatly increased since ten years ago, when the prevailing view in 
medicine was that the adult brain is essentially fixed, a finished 
product that could only decline with age. Thanks to subsequent clinical 
trial data we now know that what we eat, how we sleep, whether we 
exercise, how we manage stress, and how much cognitive simulation we 
experience all directly reshape brain structure and function. Efforts to
 tend to these areas can improve memory scores and reverse early 
cognitive decline in people who were already showing Alzheimer’s 
symptoms.&nbsp;
These are not small effects seen in obscure journals. Many of these 
findings come from institutions like Harvard, the Mayo Clinic, and the 
National Institutes of Health, and they are reshaping how neurologists 
think about prevention and treatment.
Among the questions Dr. Fotuhi will tackle: Is Alzheimer's disease 
really preventable? Can you reverse early memory loss with lifestyle 
changes alone? Why does chronic stress quietly damage your brain even

Fireman's Field Complex, 250 S. Nursery Ave., Purcellville, VA, 20132

The annual Purcellville Wine and Food Festival returns on Saturday, July 18, in Dillon’s Woods at the historic Fireman’s Field Complex (250 S. Nursery Avenue, Purcellville). The festival will take place from 2 to 8 p.m., inviting guests to gather with family and friends for an afternoon and evening of local wine, beer, food, live music, art, and more.
This year’s event will showcase 40 vendors, including wineries, breweries, food and snack vendors, and local exhibitors. Enjoy live music performances by the Rick Reaves Band, The Darby Brothers, and the Franklin Park Big Band. The “Arts in the Garden” section, hosted by the Purcellville Arts Council, will highlight local artists who will create works of art live on-site. Additional activities include face painting and a photo stand-in booth.

Join&nbsp;Naoko Kamioka&nbsp;to fold playful fish and sea creatures that capture the spirit of the ocean and the joy of origami. In this one-hour workshop, participants will create several marine-themed origami pieces while enjoying a calm, creative atmosphere.  introduction to the field of bioarchaeology and what it tells us about 
life and death in the past, with Jordan Wilson, bioarchaeologist, 
skeletal biologist, and postdoctoral fellow and lecturer at Georgetown 
University.
Gather among the living to learn how lessons are taught by the dead.
Join Dr. Jordan Wilson of Georgetown University to dig into the field
 of bioarchaeology, a science that combines knowledge of human skeletal 
anatomy with that of past cultures and treatment of the body after 
death.
Covering bioarchaeology’s history, she’ll describe how researchers 
first realized that skeletons could be every bit as important to our 
understanding of the past as artifacts displayed in museums. She’ll also
 discuss how early research on human skeletal remains unfortunately 
became intertwined with research in eugenics.
She also will give you an understanding of bioarchaeologists’ 
methods, teaching you how they determine the age, biological sex, and 
ancestry of the deceased from their bones. You’ll learn how they 
identify various traumatic injuries, from broken arms to scimitar cuts, 
as well as evidence of repetitive actions to gain insight into daily 
activities. Past health problems are identifiable from the scars left on
 bones by illnesses such as rickets, scurvy, tuberculosis, and anemia.
We’ll examine some famous bioarchaeology cases and look at what 
movies get wrong about mummies and the field of archaeology in general. 
We’ll also look at how human remains research is used for good, by 
identifying the missing, solving cold cases, and supporting tribal 
sovereignty.&nbsp;
Among the questions she’ll tackle: What’s the oldest murder mystery

Wednesday, August 5 to 26th from 4 to 6 P.M.Budget frames cost $200-$300 and high-quality frames cost $400-$800. For any artist, framing is always a pervasive problem and sometimes a crippling cost. Fortunately, with a little bit of knowledge and the right tools and materials, it doesn’t have to be you can build the highest possible quality frame for approximately $80. This class will cover everything from basic woodworking with hand tools to cutting glass to archival matting for artwork. By the end of this class, you will have a complete frame and all of the knowledge you need to make your own frames going forward.

If any artist is interested in larger, the price of class will be adjusted to reflect the cost of UV Plexi.

Week 1: Cut and Glue Frame stock.
Week 2: Finish Frame stock &amp; cut mat board.
Week 3: Cut glass, cut spacers, Cut strainer.
Week 4: Mount artwork, Cut Backing, &amp; Assemble frame.

Want to develop your interest as an artist and looking for a place to start? Whether you want to make artwork that is realistic or abstract, all art shares the same fundamentals. Beginning with traditional forms of drawing, this 4-week class will start by teaching comparative measurement, and the basic techniques artists have used to draw for hundreds of years. Next this class will transition to working from direct observation and teach students how to find inspiration from the world around them.

Drypoint is a direct and expressive way to make prints. You use a sharp tool to draw into a plate, and the burr from each scratch holds ink to create rich, velvety lines you won’t find in other mediums. There’s no need for acid, chemicals, or any previous printmaking experience. In this beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll use plexiglass plates, which are easy to draw on and perfect for trying this technique for the first time. You’ll learn how to transfer an image onto your plate, create tone and texture with different marks, ink and wipe the plate, and use the press to make your first prints. We’ll go over how to prepare your plate, explore various mark-making methods, and cover the basics of making editions. By the end, you’ll have a finished plate and a small set of prints to take home. This one-session workshop is a great way to start exploring intaglio printmaking, especially if you enjoy drawing or want an easy introduction to using a printing press. &nbsp;Level: Beginner, ages 14 and up

Night Hawk is an American indie rock band from Brunswick, Maine, now based in Washington, D.C. Originally a songwriting vehicle for Colter Adams and Peyton Semjen, the project has evolved into an acclaimed live act, earning a devoted following for its enchanting harmonies and clear-eyed lyricism.
Night Hawk’s music is defined by stark geometry and bold imagery, underpinned by crackling warmth and simmering tension. Drawing on themes of urban isolation, self-discovery amidst challenging transitions, and the catalogue of 20th century painter Edward Hopper, the band blends mellifluous violin and delicate finger-style guitar with the raw energy of barnstorming alternative rock, creating a sonic palette that is as expansive as it is emotionally precise.
The band has collaborated with the Whitney Museum and the Edward Hopper House on the Edward Hopper Recomposed concert series in Nyack, NY. Their debut album, Before We Begin, was produced by Colter Adams and Colin Miller (Indigo de Souza, Wednesday, MJ Lenderman).
Their E.P. "Somewhere, Anywhere," is out on all platforms on May 30, 2026.

Spirit of the Bear quickly became one of the most fresh and exciting bands to emerge in the Ohio music scene with their unique blend of indie rock, pop, and electronic sensibilities coupled with their affinity for pop song writing. The band’s years of musical experience are accentuated by their use of two keyboard players, bringing a unique depth to their sound. Consisting of James Harker (lead vocals, guitar), Danny Svenson (keyboards), Ethan Schwendeman (keyboards), Nate Gelfand (Bass), and Jamie Vitullo (Drums), the band has shared the stage with acts such as Crowded House, Our Lady Peace, Ra Ra Riot, and Robert DeLong, among others.
