 introduction to the field of bioarchaeology and what it tells us about 
life and death in the past, with Jordan Wilson, bioarchaeologist, 
skeletal biologist, and postdoctoral fellow and lecturer at Georgetown 
University.
Gather among the living to learn how lessons are taught by the dead.
Join Dr. Jordan Wilson of Georgetown University to dig into the field
 of bioarchaeology, a science that combines knowledge of human skeletal 
anatomy with that of past cultures and treatment of the body after 
death.
Covering bioarchaeology’s history, she’ll describe how researchers 
first realized that skeletons could be every bit as important to our 
understanding of the past as artifacts displayed in museums. She’ll also
 discuss how early research on human skeletal remains unfortunately 
became intertwined with research in eugenics.
She also will give you an understanding of bioarchaeologists’ 
methods, teaching you how they determine the age, biological sex, and 
ancestry of the deceased from their bones. You’ll learn how they 
identify various traumatic injuries, from broken arms to scimitar cuts, 
as well as evidence of repetitive actions to gain insight into daily 
activities. Past health problems are identifiable from the scars left on
 bones by illnesses such as rickets, scurvy, tuberculosis, and anemia.
We’ll examine some famous bioarchaeology cases and look at what 
movies get wrong about mummies and the field of archaeology in general. 
We’ll also look at how human remains research is used for good, by 
identifying the missing, solving cold cases, and supporting tribal 
sovereignty.&nbsp;

 on word of saviors in religion and science fiction, with Peter Herman, 
former lecturer in theology and religious studies at Marymount 
University and scholar of religious and social themes in sci fi.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Dune: Part Three is scheduled for release in December, and trailers for the epic space opera film have fans of the Dune
 franchise longing for it like visitors to its desert planet Arrakis 
long for water. Based on the second volume of renowned science fiction 
novelist Frank Herbert's Dune saga, the movie depicts the 
internal and external conflicts of protagonist Paul Atreides, an emperor
 treated by others as a messiah while being depicted as an antihero.
The film will raise intriguing questions related to the presence of 
redeeming figures, or messiahs, throughout both science fiction and 
religious texts. Among them: What exactly do we mean by the term 
“messiah”? Why have many religious traditions looked for a redeemer to 
emerge? What happens if the messiah gets it all wrong?&nbsp;
Explore such questions—and prepare yourself to enjoy the upcoming Dune
 film at a much deeper level—with Dr. Peter Herman, who has given 
several excellent, thought-provoking Profs and Pints talks on the Dune franchise.
To center Dune in the discussion, we’ll look at the 
character of Paul Atriedes as a ruler who has launched a jihad across 
known space to reconquer it. His prescient visions show him that 
although the spread of religious war is not optimal, neither is it the 
worst potential future for humanity, and he allows excess and violence 
to continue in his name out of a conviction that it’s for the greater 
good. Throughout the book on which the upcoming film is based, Atriedes 
struggles with his followers' desire to view him as a divine figure.
Dr. Herman, a trained theologian, will set such themes in the broader
 context of religious studies by discussing messianic figures across 
various religious traditions. Among them, Christianity names Jesus of 
Nazareth as the messiah, but he is hardly the first person in the 
canonical Bible given that title. Mainstream Judaism does not anticipate
 any similar, deified figure descending from heaven, but messianic 
strains of Judaism have looked for the arrival of a political liberator.
 Islam, from which Frank Herbert borrowed terms applied to Paul 
Atriedes, contains reference to someone serving not as a redeemer but as
 a heavenly guide. All branches of Buddhism situate within each new age 
of their cyclical cosmology a Buddha-yet-to-come.
We’ll look at the human tendency in confusing times to seek out 
direct, uncomplicated answers and to embrace messianism as part of 
apocalypticism, which foretells a straightforward sorting process in 
which believers, as good people, see reward while their enemies, as bad 
people, see punishment.&nbsp;
Dune fans will feel rewarded in coming to this talk.

Through intuitive drawing and creative exploration, participants will transform thoughts and emotions into meaningful visual expressions on canvas using acrylic paintmarkers and bring home their own masterpiece.

Most people think exercise is about losing weight, building muscle, 
or running faster. But what if the greatest benefit of exercise is 
something much bigger: Helping us live longer and better?
Join internationally recognized sports cardiologist Dr. Ankit Shah 
for an engaging look at the fascinating science connecting exercise, 
fitness, and longevity.&nbsp;
Drawing on research involving elite athletes, recreational 
exercisers, and everyday people, Dr. Shah will explore how exercise 
changes the heart, brain, muscles, and metabolism—and why these changes 
can have profound effects on our health as we age.
You’ll learn why cardiorespiratory fitness may be one of the most 
powerful predictors of long-term health. We’ll look at what the widely 
used VO2max test of blood oxygen levels during exercise can and cannot 
tell us about aging, and how exercise can protect against some of the 
diseases that become more common as we get older.&nbsp;
You’ll also discover whether there really is such a thing as “too 
much” exercise and how to find the right balance between training hard 
and recovering well.
Dr. Shah will discuss the optimal amount of exercise to live longer 
and how athletes get in trouble by assuming that being fit necessarily 
equals being healthy. He’ll talk about how, when it comes to determining
 our longevity, the reasons why we exercise can be every bit as 
important as the amount of exercise we get—a short run to stave off the 
urge to smoke or drink can pay off more than a long run followed by a

We will discuss the Pros and Cons of different papers and threads that can be used for a stich book. Demonstrate paperfolding, cutting techniques, and pasting papers to the book covers.
Day 2: Signature and Board Preparation: Demonstrate folding, cutting and holes punching for signature pages. Ribbon and decorative elements will be reviewed and book structure design discussed.

<a href="https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Profs and Pints Northern Virginia</a> presents: “The Victorians' Sexual Underworld,” on
 sex workers and queer communities in nineteenth century cities, with 
Andrew Israel Ross, associate professor and chair of history at Loyola 
University Maryland and author or editor of several books and articles 
on the history of prostitution, homosexuality, and policing in 
nineteenth century Paris.
We are living through a moral panic about the presence of sexual and 
gender diversity in our society, as evidenced by attacks on Pride month,
 calls to ban drag queen story hours, and governmental efforts to 
redefine sex and gender. Underlying such actions is a sense that the 
increasing prominence of queer and trans people in American society 
represents something new and unexpected, a deviation from a clear 
history of heterosexual and gender stability.&nbsp;
The reality, however, is that queer life—and sexual life broadly—used
 to be much more central to social life than it is today, especially in 
growing cities during the Industrial Revolution.
Come to Arlington’s Highline RxR beer hall to gain an eye-opening 
understanding of the history of sexual communities often seen as 
marginal in history–female sex workers, gay men and lesbians, and 
transgender people.
Dr. Andrew Ross, a historian of sexuality, will explain why public 
sex was so important to nineteenth century urban culture and how 
Victorians wrestled with evidence of sexual and gender diversity. 
Drawing from his intensive study of the history of Paris but also from 
research on London, Berlin, and New York during the Industrial Age, 
he’ll discuss the sexual ideology of the Victorians and how it gave 
substantial opportunities to people who faced a great deal of 
discrimination then and continue to face it now.
You’ll learn about the practice “regulationism,” which sought to 
manage the business of sex work so that heterosexual men could always 
have access to sex.&nbsp;
Then we’ll look at the queer male world – one that often intersected 
with that of female prostitutes – and the spaces where men found one 
another quite publicly. Dr. Ross will discuss the emergence of the first
 gay bars, which were opened (perhaps surprisingly) by women, and talk 
about how people who did not identify as either men or women navigated 
this world.&nbsp;
What happened to these cultures? The talk will conclude by focusing 
on a period between the World Wars characterized by incredible 
experimentation with sexual identity, community building and politics. 
We’ll look at how it came to an end with the rise of the Nazis in Europe

ensuring your visits to other places benefit all involved, with Melissa 
A. Stevens, principal at CultureSnap Consulting and adjunct professor of
 cultural anthropology at the University of Delaware.&nbsp;
Mark Twain once famously remarked that “travel is fatal to prejudice,
 bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” Indeed, it can open our minds to new 
ideas and possibilities, positively contribute to local communities, and
 help us establish lasting relationships with people across the world.&nbsp;
At the same time, however, our travels can be harmful to the people 
and places we visit and to our world as a whole. We can end up 
exploiting vulnerable populations, worsening global and local 
inequalities, accelerating climate change, and forever altering the 
places and cultures that we visit.&nbsp;
How are responsible tourists supposed to navigate these contradictions without ruining their vacation?&nbsp;
Explore the cultural complexities of what it means to travel, and 
find ways to ensure your conscience rests easy after full travel days, 
with the help of cultural anthropologist Melissa Stevens.&nbsp;
She’ll start by discussing how her own field has not always been a 
positive force in other parts of the world, and historically has 
committed some of the same sins as the tourism marketing industry when 
it comes to shaping Western perceptions of Non-Western cultures. Popular
 anthropologists such as Margaret Mead and Napoleon Chagnon contributed 
to the “exotification” and exploitation of indigenous peoples and local 
communities in ways that cast a shadow on their work.&nbsp;
In confronting the ethical implications of its early history, 
anthropology developed a perspective known as “cultural relativism,” 
which called upon anthropologists to build awareness of their own 
cultural assumptions as a means to engage more ethically and responsibly
 with the people and places they visited. Anyone, including tourists, 
can learn to have a culturally relativist mindset in their travels.&nbsp;
Dr. Stevens will discuss how anthropologists use cultural relativism 
to gain a deeper understanding of people and places. She’ll also talk 
about how anthropologists look at tourism through a cultural lens, 
diving into the politics of representation, of performance, and of 
authenticity, and also examining gendered experiences of tourism. We'll 
take a tour through the history of travel, from early pilgrims to 
digital nomads, and we’ll explore different types of tourism, including 
cultural tourism, ecotourism, sex and romance tourism, dark tourism, 
backpacking, and “voluntourism.”
We’ll consider the environmental and cultural impacts of tourism on 
tourist destinations. Drawing from her experiences conducting 
ethnographic research on cultural and sustainable tourism in Tanzania 
and Vietnam, Dr. Stevens will share immersive stories about what she 
learned in researching how tourism was perceived and experienced by the 
people who live with it.&nbsp;

 on the recent history of election-related terrorism and the potential 
for violence before, during, and after the midterms, with Jacob Ware, 
adjunct professor at Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of 
Foreign Service and scholar of domestic and international terrorism.&nbsp;
The United States has been plagued by election violence over the past
 several years, with recent incidents including the January 6, 2021, 
attack on the Capitol and the attempted 2024 assassination of Donald 
Trump during an open-air campaign rally.&nbsp;
But the historical record indicates that such election violence is 
not an aberration. American elections have been undermined by terrorism 
and political violence since the nation’s founding. We should therefore 
not be surprised if violence again mars the upcoming 2026 midterms.
Join terrorism expert Jacob Ware, coauthor of God, Guns, and Sedition: Far-Right Terrorism in America, for an in-depth look at past and potential election-related violence.
He’ll examine the violence of election cycles in the Trump era, 
including assassination attempts during candidate campaigning, voter 
intimidation on Election Day, and attempts to forcefully affect 
vote-counting in the days and weeks after the vote itself.
He’ll cover the spectrum of domestic and homegrown terrorist actors, 
including longstanding Salafi-jihadist adversaries as well as far-right 
extremists and far-left extremists, and draw on various data sources to 
assess which actors will pose the gravest threat of violence around the 
2026 midterms.
His talk will conclude with a set of practical recommendations that 
both government and citizens can follow to try to ensure peace during

Across Latin America and the Caribbean, China is helping build ports,
 digital networks, energy projects, space facilities, and supply chains

diplomatic relationships, security dynamics, and the balance of power in
 the United States’ neighborhood.
Learn about the implications of China’s growing investment and

headlines and simplistic narratives of China as either a predatory 
threat or a benevolent development partner.
The speaker, Leland Lazarus, is a former special assistant to two 
commanders of U.S. Southern Command who has spent more than a decade 
researching China’s engagement with the Western Hemisphere.
In accessible, nonpartisan terms he’ll seek to answer two fundamental
 questions: Is China’s growing role in the Americas primarily an 
economic opportunity, a strategic challenge, or both? And what should 
the United States do to remain a trusted, competitive partner without 
forcing the region to choose sides?
He’ll discuss how China’s regional presence affects trade, technology, migration, crime, and U.S. national security.&nbsp;
Drawing on examples from across the hemisphere, he will explain why 
ports and undersea cables matter, how Beijing competes with Taiwan for

Psychedelics are rapidly moving from the margins into the mainstream,
 and questions abound as the sociocultural and legal landscapes 
surrounding them shift. President Trump’s recent executive order 
expanding access to psychedelic drugs for certain conditions and 
accelerating research on them has both heightened interest and added to 
confusion.
Learn more about the so-called “Psychedelic Renaissance,” and get 
help separating the hope from the hype surrounding it, with Whitney 
Marris, a leading trainer and facilitator of psychedelic therapy who has
 used it to treat trauma survivors, military veterans, and people with 
cancer.
She’ll present foundational information on what we know about how 
psychedelics work. You’ll learn how psychedelic-assisted therapy differs
 from “trip sitting” and about what we know about the effects of 
“microdosing” versus “macrodosing.” We’ll examine what has been

Catholic Church and medieval historian and director of Catholic Studies 
at Georgetown University.
Today people often discuss fraud and forgery as if they are uniquely 
modern problems—the products of the internet, artificial intelligence, 
and the rise of deepfakes. But the impulse to deceive by fabricating 
evidence, identities, or images is far older than any digital 
technology. Moreover, even those who did not get away with it for long 
sometimes altered the course of history with their trickery.
Learn in depth about such deceptions during an evening of mythmaking 
and myth-busting with Dr. Vanessa R. Corcoran, previously has given 
excellent Profs and Pints on Catholic history and culture and the 2025 
papal conclave.
She’ll walk you through a series of forgeries tied to the Crusades, 
the Catholic Church, and the Byzantine Empire, especially focusing on 
fakery that confounded the medieval world. You’ll learn about cases 
involving forged documents, imitated signatures, counterfeited money, 
bogus works of art, and imposters in disguise.
We’ll look at how Roman artists in antiquity created sculptures that 
they attempted to pass off as Greek works to increase marketability. 
(Even Michelangelo was guilty of trying to disguise one of his 
sculptures as a work from the classical era.) Later on, Dutch painter 
Han Van Meegeren created numerous forgeries of Vermeer’s paintings, 
ultimately getting convicted of fraud and forgery.
Among acts of deception that changed the course of history was a 
medieval forgery titled “The Donation of Constantine,” which as of the 
late 700s was used to buttress claims that the fourth-century Byzantine 
Emperor Constantine I had transferred authority over Rome to the Pope. 
It was viewed as authentic until fifteenth-century Renaissance humanist 
Lorenzo Valla debunked it as created centuries after Constantine died.
A popular legend in the Catholic Church held that a woman later known
 as “Pope Joan” disguised herself as a man and ruled as “popess” in the 
ninth century. That narrative, largely debunked by modern historians, 
was treated by medieval chronicles as credible and used to buttress 
arguments that women should be ordained as priests.
Among other cases we’ll examine include the Shroud of Turin, 
purported to be the burial shroud of Jesus of Nazareth, which was 
denounced as forgery as early as 1389 but remains venerated as a relic 
by some believers.
Dr. Corcoran’s talk will offer an important lens for understanding 
the challenges and stakes of today’s debates over AI-generated fakery. 
You’ll walk away with an appreciation of how every generation has had to
 learn, often painfully, how to distinguish what merely looks authentic

With the approach of any major election comes the emergence of 
pollsters, pundits and, yes, even professors who claim to know how the 
voting will go. Few of them explain how they reached their conclusions, 
even if they conflict with the predictions of others.
Profs and Pints is bringing you a talk to help you see through the 
spin, wishful thinking, and wild guesses about the 2026 midterm 
elections.&nbsp;
Professor Matthew Green, a scholar of congressional and electoral 
politics, will pull back the curtain to show you the tools that 
political scientists and professional prognosticators use in forecasting
 election outcomes. He will discuss some of the common misconceptions 
about what influences the vote, and he will review the strengths and 
weaknesses of various predictive models and the assumptions that lie 
behind each of them.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Professor Green also will examine several factors unique to this 
year's elections, including the impacts of mid-decade redistricting and 
the public's views of President Trump. He will discuss why many models 
predict that Democrats will gain seats in both the House and Senate but

Through my small business, Rogers Resolution Services, I offer mediation and conflict-resolution support tailored to your unique needs and help guide people through difficult conversations. I work primarily with co-parents, partners, relatives, roommates, and teams who need help talking through decisions, routines, boundaries, or recurring disagreements. I also support workplaces and community groups facing communication challenges or breakdowns. My role is neutral. I don’t give legal advice or take sides. I facilitate conversations, de-escalate tense situations, and help people reach practical and maintainable agreements they can feel comfortable with.
