Profs and Pints DC presents: “A Guide to Witches,” on the figure of the witch in history, legend, folklore, and fairy tales, with Linda Lee, lecturer in folklore and literature at the University of Pennsylvania.
Get ready for something spellbinding: A look at various depictions of witches as reflections of ideas about female sexuality, independence, agency, and power.
Offering up this pre-Halloween treat will be folklorist Linda Lee, who earned rave reviews in previously giving this talk in other cities.
We’ll start with an introduction to witches from European folklore, fairy tales, and legends. You’ll learn how they’re generally portrayed as powerful, solitary, and defiant figures who can be either helpful or harmful. They may appear as mothers, helpers who aid heroes on quests, or monsters to be vanquished. They can represent a threat to the community by snatching children or by pilfering cows’ milk.
Individual witches who will be conjured up include the child-eating witch from Grimms’ “Hansel and Gretel” and Baba Yaga, the ambiguous witch of Slavic folklore who lives in a hut on chicken legs and flies around inside a giant mortar while clutching a big pestle. Lee contrasts such fictional depictions with the ideas about witches and witchcraft espoused by Christian demonological thought.
You’ll learn how witches are described by early modern sources like Malleus Maleficarum, the 15th-century treatise on witchcraft which also served as a witch hunters’ manual. Such texts presented witches as entirely malevolent figures who gain magical powers through a pact with the Devil (usually signed with menstrual blood). They depicted witches as using a special ointment that empowers them to fly to a Witches’ Sabbath to dance and perform demonic rituals.
You’ll see how such ideas were visually reinforced through engravings, woodcuts, and drawings, by artists like Albrecht Dürer, that depicted naked women riding broomsticks and dancing with devils.
You’ll come away with a better understanding of why witches are among the most versatile, notorious, and enduring figures from fairy tales and legends and remain an iconic part of contemporary Halloween traditions. Feel free to dress witchy if you wish. Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Profs and Pints DC presents: “The Haunted House,” on scary dwellings and their grip on us, with Brittany Warman, former instructor at Ohio State University and co-founder of The Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic.
The haunted house has long held a place in the imaginations of those who enjoy a bit of uncanny terror, posing the ultimate threat to security and normalcy. It’s where something familiar becomes strange and unsettling, even threatening. You initially might have thought you're safe—after all, you should be safe indoors—but you're not. Sanctuary and shelter have turned against you. The very walls trouble your dreams.
Come tour some of the most terrifying real estate ever imagined with Brittany Warman, who has earned herself a large and devoted following among Profs and Pints audiences with excellent past talks on folklore, fairy tales, and horror.
She’ll show you the fascinating folkloric, literary, and real-world history of the haunted house. She’ll leave you wondering about the creepy old places in your town with doors that you’re afraid to approach on Halloween, and she might even leave you eager to turn your own home into such an eerie dwelling.
She’ll begin by discussing the scary structures of fairy tales, such as gingerbread houses and Bluebeard's castle, exploring how the early stories told about them influenced the terrifying tales of Henry James' Bly Manor and Edgar Allen Poe's House of Usher. She’ll consider the impact of haunted spaces on the Gothic and horror genres and explain why haunted houses are often so opulent and so decadent in their decay.
Among the questions Dr. Warman will tackle: What might the haunted house have to say about history, culture, and society? What draws us, again and again, to haunted houses, making us want to visit them, find their ghosts, and uncover their stories?
She'll conclude by examining how these tales still resonate today, in haunted houses both purportedly real and those decidedly fake, meant for shocks and thrills. Even Disney's Haunted Mansion ride will make an appearance. It’s a scary world after all. Profs and Pints DC presents: “Digging Up Vampires,” on the origins and evolution of vampire beliefs, with Jordan Wilson, bioarchaeologist, skeletal biologist, and assistant professor at Georgetown University.
Hollywood has taught many of us that vampires are alluring undead creatures that drink blood, recoil from garlic and crucifixes, and turn to dust in sunlight. The truth, however, is much creepier.
Venture into DC’s Penn Social to learn what we know about real vampire beliefs based on research by archeologists, forensic scientists, and psychologists.
Dr. Jordan Wilson, who gives excellent Profs and Pints talks, will discuss how vampires prowled long before Dracula emerged from Transylvania.
You’ll learn how folkloric traditions from the ancient Mediterranean and Middle East spoke of fears of restless dead, nocturnal demons, and spirits that preyed upon the living. In later Europe, fears of revenants and vampires took on new forms as disease outbreaks swept through communities and the exhumed dead were seen as having undergone mysterious transformations.
Drawing on mortuary archaeology and paleopathology, Dr. Wilson will examine real graves of individuals believed to be vampires, their skeletons found with stones in their mouths, iron stakes through their bodies, or sickles across their throats to prevent them from rising. She’ll explore what these burials reveal about fears of disease, death, and social marginalization, and how modern anthropology can help explain the beliefs that created them.
We’ll also investigate how sleep paralysis inspired encounters with demons, how diseases such as tuberculosis, cholera, and malaria contributed to vampire traditions, and how misunderstandings about decomposition convinced communities that the dead were feeding on the living.
You’ll emerge with an appreciation of how the real history of vampires is far stranger—and far more revealing of basic human fears—than the stories about vampires in popular culture. Have you ever wondered how and why the impressionist painted the way they did?
Would you like to learn to paint like an impressionist yourself?
Around the turn of the 20th century, there were dramatic changes in the art world. Where previous generations of artists once favored rigid techniques and spending thousands of hours in studios glazing hundreds of layers of paint, now artists aspired to create more immediate paintings and tried to more directly capture the world they saw.
This class, meant for students at all skill levels, will start from the ground up teaching students how to mix colors like the impressionists and introduce students to various techniques that evolved in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
All supplies are included with the class as students will be encouraged to try out different paints, brushes, and other painting materials throughout the class.

Profs and Pints DC presents: “Facing Fascism,” on the history, hallmarks, and lingering power of a deadly ideology, with Kevin Matthews, professor of history at George Mason University and teacher of courses on early 20th century European history.
Few political movements have aroused as much anger and fear as fascism. But despite its legacy of violence, persecution, and genocide, fascism continues to hold a strange attraction to many.
Join historian Kevin Matthews for an in-depth look at an ideology that brought death to millions in Europe and yet continues to deeply influence our politics and culture.
In an encore staging of a talk that earned rave reviews at Penn Social last spring, Dr. Matthews will start by discussing how the ideology of fascism arose in the aftermath of the First World War and took hold in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s.
To give you a better grasp of what exactly fascism is, he’ll discuss its central themes: Anti-democracy. Extreme nationalism and anti-communism. The use, or threat, of violence in politics. Rejection of established values such as scientific objectivity. Denial of equal rights, especially for women. The assertion of power where a power vacuum exists.
We’ll examine the rise and fall of two notorious fascist dictators, Adolf Hitler of Germany and Benito Mussolini of Italy. For a time it was believed that fascism died in the ashes of the Second World War, but it clearly didn’t, and we’ll look at where it remains a political force today.
Finally, we’ll examine how fascism continues to permeate popular culture in ways that trivialize it, popping up in music from punk to Madonna, with its latent eroticism making it the subject of films such as The Night Porter. Having been called “the most self-consciously visual of all political forms,” it enlisted fashion leaders to produce uniforms and continues today to inspire a look known as “Nazi chic.”
Dr. Matthews also has given fantastic Profs and Pints talks on Ireland’s fight for independence and on World War II German submarine attacks off our coasts. He’s sure to leave you with a much better understanding of fascism and a recognition that is has hardly gone away. Profs and Pints Northern Virginia presents: “Dune and Messiahs,” on word of saviors in religion and science fiction, with Peter Herman, former lecturer in theology and religious studies at Marymount University and scholar of religious and social themes in sci fi.
Dune: Part Three is scheduled for release in December, and trailers for the epic space opera film have fans of the Dune franchise longing for it like visitors to its desert planet Arrakis long for water. Based on the second volume of renowned science fiction novelist Frank Herbert's Dune saga, the movie depicts the internal and external conflicts of protagonist Paul Atreides, an emperor treated by others as a messiah while being depicted as an antihero.
The film will raise intriguing questions related to the presence of redeeming figures, or messiahs, throughout both science fiction and religious texts. Among them: What exactly do we mean by the term “messiah”? Why have many religious traditions looked for a redeemer to emerge? What happens if the messiah gets it all wrong?
Explore such questions—and prepare yourself to enjoy the upcoming Dune film at a much deeper level—with Dr. Peter Herman, who has given several excellent, thought-provoking Profs and Pints talks on the Dune franchise.
To center Dune in the discussion, we’ll look at the character of Paul Atriedes as a ruler who has launched a jihad across known space to reconquer it. His prescient visions show him that although the spread of religious war is not optimal, neither is it the worst potential future for humanity, and he allows excess and violence to continue in his name out of a conviction that it’s for the greater good. Throughout the book on which the upcoming film is based, Atriedes struggles with his followers' desire to view him as a divine figure.
Dr. Herman, a trained theologian, will set such themes in the broader context of religious studies by discussing messianic figures across various religious traditions. Among them, Christianity names Jesus of Nazareth as the messiah, but he is hardly the first person in the canonical Bible given that title. Mainstream Judaism does not anticipate any similar, deified figure descending from heaven, but messianic strains of Judaism have looked for the arrival of a political liberator. Islam, from which Frank Herbert borrowed terms applied to Paul Atriedes, contains reference to someone serving not as a redeemer but as a heavenly guide. All branches of Buddhism situate within each new age of their cyclical cosmology a Buddha-yet-to-come.
We’ll look at the human tendency in confusing times to seek out direct, uncomplicated answers and to embrace messianism as part of apocalypticism, which foretells a straightforward sorting process in which believers, as good people, see reward while their enemies, as bad people, see punishment.
Dune fans will feel rewarded in coming to this talk. The past few months have witnessed a dramatic escalation of the war in Ukraine, soon to enter into its fifth year. Europe is very much a party to that conflict, and Russia is flirting with actions that could push Europe closer to direct involvement.
Learn about the latest developments in that conflict and what they portend for Europe, NATO, and our own nation with Michael Kimmage, a former Catholic University historian who has given outstanding Profs and Pints talks on Ukraine in the past.
He’ll help you make sense of recent headlines regarding interruptions in Ukrainian access to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service, Ukraine’s attacks on Russian data centers, and President Trump’s agreement to purchase Russian diesel fuel and waiver of economic sanctions on Russia.
We’ll look at how Europe has assisted Ukraine in hitting targets inside of Russia, such as data centers and oil refineries, and how Russia has increased its sabotage and subversion efforts in Europe, recently mounting a failed attack on Germany’s Leipzig airport.
We’ll explore the open question of whether Europe and Russia are already at war with one another. If so, what will this mean for the war in Ukraine itself? What will it mean for the possibility that a Russia-Europe war could become a Russia-NATO war? How does it complicate the prospects of a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine in the foreseeable future?
We’ll also look at the difficult relations between Europe and the United States in the second term of President Donald Trump, from the recent White House deal to purchase Russian diesel to the possibility that Starlink access to Ukraine might be reduced or cut off, rendering it more vulnerable to Russian attacks. Profs and Pints DC presents: “Spirits Around the Place,” a look at East Slavic beliefs in supernatural creatures and haunted spaces, with folklorist Philippa Rappoport of George Washington University.
Traditional beliefs associated with Ukraine, Belarus and Russia hold that we’re seldom alone, even if no people are around. Instead, we’re nearly always surrounded by mythological beings. They can make our lives complicated and sometimes even injure or murder us, sometimes because we’ve annoyed them or, in other cases, just because that’s what they like to do.
Prepare to return to the days when you wondered what’s under your bed with this talk by Philippa Rappoport, an expert on Slavic folklore and rituals. She’ll describe how East Slavic culture long ago gave rise to beliefs in such mythological beings, known as “nature” or “place” spirits, who exert their influence on farmsteads, bathhouses, threshing barns, woods, water, and, yes, our own homes. Their presence was felt daily in the peasant’s world, and it still can be seen today in the ways in which people relate to home, space, and boundaries.
The real frightening fun will come when Dr. Rappoport introduces us to these supernatural beings, discussing their characteristics and the beliefs and traditions surrounding them.
We'll learn about the spirits of the home and homestead, such as the domovoi, a cranky spiritual master and protector of the home and hearth, and his counterpart of the yard, the dvorovoi. We'll talk about the bannik, the bathhouse spirit who presides over bathing and births but also sees saunas as a great place to strangle folks who don’t show him enough respect.
A little farther from home, we'll meet the spirits of the forests, waters, and fields. They include the leshii, master of the forest and its inhabitants, who might appear like a peasant, devil, or beast. Another spirit, the vodianoi, or “water devil,” is a bloated, shaggy, slimy water spirit that you’ll want to avoid at all costs.
We'll examine how these supernatural creatures are related to perceptions of space, boundaries, danger, and people who are categorized as “others” and shunned for it. We’ll gain insights on how people express fear of the unknown, and how such fear connects to xenophobia and some of the worst human behavior imaginable, deeds which render their perpetrators as monsters in their own right. It’s a talk that will give you an entirely new vantage point for viewing Slavic history and culture, and help you better understand the 19th- and 20-century Russian propensity to close borders or punish by exile and gulag.
