 on recognizing and responding to harmful traditional practices that 
exert control over others, with Sasha K. Taylor, visiting lecturer at 
Ohio State University’s Global Fellowship Program and advisor and 
trainer in honor violence prevention.
People claiming to enforce traditional honor codes are responsible 
for a significant share of murders and other violent or abusive acts 
within immigrant and refugee communities. Honor-based violence and abuse
 often play a role in human trafficking, forced marriage, child 
marriage, visa-based coercion, and in the abandonment of families across
 international borders. Yet too often it is underreported, 
misunderstood, or overlooked by people and institutions with the power 
to help its victims.
Learn how to spot and deal with honor-based violence with Sasha K. 
Taylor, a former FBI Intelligence official who provides training to law 
enforcement, non-profit organizations, and private companies and also is
 extensively involved with regional organizations that combat human 
trafficking.
She’ll start by discussing how honor codes that have governed 
community life since the dawn of human civilization gave rise to the use
 of honor-related abuse, oppression, shame, and violence to exert 
control and perpetuate inequality. Although boys and men can be victims 
of honor-based violence, the perpetrators of it are predominantly male 
and the survivors predominantly female, lending support to the idea that
 honor violence is a form of gender-based violence. The forms that such 
violence can take include genital mutilation and honor killings.
She’ll discuss state and federal data related to the prevalence of 
various forms of honor violence and describe how complex forms of abuse 
are often underreported, misunderstood, or overlooked. You’ll learn 
about cultural and systemic barriers to disclosure, warning signs and 
risk factors, the intersection of immigration vulnerabilities and abuse,
 and the challenges that survivors face when seeking protection and 
services.
We’ll also look at policy responses to honor violence and how gaps 
within current federal immigration frameworks may unintentionally 
contribute to vulnerability and exploitation.
Her talk will be especially helpful for first responders, victim 
advocates, educators, healthcare professionals, social workers, and law 
enforcement personnel who are often the first point of contact during a 
crisis. She’ll emphasize trauma-informed engagement, emotional 
intelligence, cultural competency, and empathetic response strategies

psychedelic-assisted therapy facilitator, and consultant to clinical

Psychedelics are rapidly moving from the margins into the mainstream,
 and questions abound as the sociocultural and legal landscapes 
surrounding them shift. President Trump’s recent executive order 
expanding access to psychedelic drugs for certain conditions and 
accelerating research on them has both heightened interest and added to 
confusion.&nbsp;
Learn more about the so-called “Psychedelic Renaissance,” and get 
help separating the hope from the hype surrounding it, with Whitney 
Marris, a leading trainer and facilitator of psychedelic therapy who has
 used it to treat trauma survivors, military veterans, and people with 
cancer.
She’ll present foundational information on what we know about how 
psychedelics work. You’ll learn how psychedelic-assisted therapy differs
 from “trip sitting” and about what we know about the effects of 
“microdosing” versus “macrodosing.” We’ll examine what has been 
demonstrated to be helpful versus harmful before, during, and after a 
dosing session intended to support significant, sustainable change.
Marris also will discuss the historical and cultural context of the 
use of psychedelic medicines for healing, and she’ll describe the 
ethical challenges that arise as such practices move from counterculture
 to clinic. We’ll look at emerging and evolving findings in the field, 
as well as at the roles being played by various financial interests and 
ideologies in determining the direction of psychedelic-assisted therapy 
and research on its outcomes.

<a href="https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Profs and Pints DC</a> presents: “Is ICE Above the Law?”, an examination of the federal officer accountability crisis and of 
unconstitutional and unchecked assertions of power, with Scott 
Michelman, legal director of ACLU-D.C. and lecturer on law and Shikes 
Fellow in Civil Liberties and Civil Rights at Harvard Law School.
The Trump administration has encouraged Immigration and Customs 
Enforcement members and other federal agents to commit horrifying abuses
 based on claims that they have “absolute immunity.” The results have 
been devastating. Renee Good, Alex Pretti, Ruben Ray Martinez, and Keith
 Porter Jr. are all dead at the hands of federal agents, and countless 
more have been subjected to needless violence and trauma.&nbsp;&nbsp;
A recent ACLU and YouGov poll showed that 93 percent of 
voters—including 89 percent of Trump voters—believe that federal agents 
should not be above the law. What many Americans don’t know is just how 
difficult it can be to hold federal officers accountable when they 
violate constitutional rights.
Join Scott Michelman, legal scholar and ACLU-D.C. legal director, for
 a deep dive into why it’s so difficult for most ordinary people to seek
 justice from federal agents and what can be done about it.&nbsp;
He’ll discuss legal precedents that limit the ability of ordinary 
people to seek justice. Although the Supreme Court had held for most of 
the past half-century that federal officers should be suable just like 
their state counterparts, it reversed course in a series of cases over 
the last 10 years, declaring in 2017 that permitting suits against 
federal officers was a “disfavored judicial activity” that courts should
 almost never allow because Congress has not specifically provided for 
such suits.
You’ll learn about the ramifications of an alarming accountability 
gap between federal and state officers. For example, after Minneapolis 
Police Officer Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd in 2020, Mr. Floyd’s 
family sued the City of Minneapolis and police officers for violating 
his constitutional rights and secured a $27 million settlement. Federal 
law, however, does not allow the families of Alex Pretti and Renee Good 
to file that type of lawsuit against the federal agents who shot and 
killed them just miles from where Mr. Floyd was murdered.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
You’ll learn how federal and local lawmakers can fix this problem. 
Potential federal remedies include reform bills pending in Congress 
right now, such as the Constitutional Accountability Act. At the local 
level, the District of Columbia could pass a law authorizing federal 
officer suits for constitutional violations.&nbsp;
Finally, we'll talk about what people in D.C. and across the country

Nathan’s Cancer Slayers, a local Arlington fundraising team under Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, invites the community to Cocktails for a Cause — An Amalfi Coast Evening on Sunday, June 14 in Georgetown. ✨🍸
This inaugural silent auction will bring together friends, neighbors, and community supporters for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a fun silent auction — all raising funds for childhood cancer research in honor of Nathan Fleming, an Arlington student who passed away from rhabdomyosarcoma in 2019, just one week after turning 18.
Nathan was an Arlington student and alum of Jamestown Elementary, Swanson Middle School, and Washington-Liberty High School. His mom, Michele Fleming, formed Nathan’s Cancer Slayers under Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation in 2020, and the team has raised more than $775,000 to advance childhood cancer research.
This year’s auction will support promising research led by Dr. Valter Longo at USC and Dr. JinSeok Park at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, with the goal of moving this work toward clinical trials for children within the next 2-3 years.
Guests can attend the event in person, browse and bid online from anywhere, or make a donation directly. Auction items include luxury getaways, VIP experiences, local packages, handcrafted items, and more.
Every ticket, donation, and auction bid will be matched 1:1 by Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation up to $30,000, doubling the impact of community support.&nbsp;💪
