Want to tackle climate change in your local community?If you've been wondering what you can do to tackle climate change, EcoAction Arlington invites you to an information session about the EcoAmbassador program.

This climate and energy-centered volunteer training and community engagement program, co-managed by EcoAction Arlington and the Virginia Cooperative Extension, empowers everyday people to lead grassroots environmental efforts. Local residents looking to make a meaningful difference in our community can now apply for the 2026–2027 cohort of EcoAmbassadors. <a href="https://www.ecoactionarlington.org/get-involved/ecoambassadors/ea-training/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Applications are open online through August 31, 2026</a>. To help you learn more, EcoAction Arlington is hosting an informal summer social. Summer is sizzling — cool down with an evening of refreshing drinks and relaxing origami at a cozy art center in Georgetown. Join&nbsp;Naoko Kamioka&nbsp;to fold playful fish and sea creatures that capture the spirit of the ocean and the joy of origami. In this one-hour workshop, participants will create several marine-themed origami pieces while enjoying a calm, creative atmosphere. After the class, the participants can transform the origami &nbsp;creations into an ocean collage, a hanging mobile, decorations for a craft fishing net, or other imaginative displays to bring a touch of the sea into &nbsp;home.

Inspired by the rich visual language of traditional Persian miniature painting, this workshop invites participants to explore contemporary approaches to this intricate and poetic art form. Through storytelling, symbolism, pattern, color, and composition, participants will create their own modern interpretations while learning about the history and aesthetics of Persian miniatures.
Using acrylic and gold leaf we will experiment with detailed imagery, decorative elements, layered spaces, and narrative scenes. The workshop encourages both technical exploration and personal expression, blending tradition with contemporary themes and individual imagination.

 an introduction to the biology, habits, and conservation of various owl
 species in our region and beyond, with Steve Sheffield, professor of 
biology at Bowie State University, curator of mammals and birds for the 
Natural History Society of Maryland, and president of the Maryland 
Ornithological Society.
Who wants to learn about owls?
If you are fascinated by these hunters of the night, you’ll love 
spending an evening with Steve Sheffield, a biologist who extensively 
studies owls and works to conserve them.
He’ll start by covering the different types of owls in our region and
 elsewhere, and the ways in which their bodies and their sizes represent
 physical adaptations to their environment. He’ll especially focus on 
the owl species of the United States and Canada, describing their 
biology, ranges, preferred habitat and prey, behavior, and 
vocalizations.&nbsp;
You’ll learn how and why field biologists study owls and how owl 
researchers from around the world assemble periodically to discuss their
 work. We’ll consider owls' value to ecosystems and, especially, humans 
and human-dominated landscapes where they serve as especially efficient 
killers of rodents and other crop-harming pests.
Dr. Sheffield will talk about the many years he has spent researching
 owls, with much of his work focused on their exposure to environmental 
contaminants and how they’re affected.&nbsp;
Being top predators, owls serve as sensitive bioindicators of 
contamination throughout the food chain. Much like canaries in coal 
mines, they function as an early warning system alerting us to 
potentially dangerous levels of toxicity. We don’t just study them for

 a guide to discovering and documenting your lineage, with Fatou Sow, 
genealogist, adjunct lecturer at Howard University, and project director
 for the soon-to-be-launched Black Family Museum and Archive.
Where does your name come from, and what does it mean?
Answering such questions, and otherwise researching our roots, can 
unlock a deeper sense of who we are and what we want to become. Learn 
valuable tips for studying, preserving, and presenting your family’s 
lineage with Fatou Sow, an educator, social scientist, and 
multidisciplinary artist who frequently partners with organizations to 
stage genealogy workshops and storytelling events.
She’ll start by looking at the concept of the “nuclear family” and 
how it has evolved far beyond old-school ideals as a result of economic 
shocks and shifting social values.&nbsp;
Then Fatou will share practical tools for capturing your own 
lineage—focusing on the art of oral history interviews with elders—and 
introduce a draft collection policy to help your family safely organize 
and steward its history. You will learn how to research ancestral lines
 not just through paperwork, but through art, music, food, and cultural 
spaces.&nbsp;
As a real-world example, Fatou will share her work with the Griot 
Collective, which hosts genealogy-focused events in Washington D.C., 
Detroit, and Alabama. She’ll also discuss her central role in developing
 University of Maryland grant funded Black Family Museum and Archive, 
which uses photographs, writing, video documentation, and 3D 
installations to tell stories.&nbsp;
Talk attendees are encouraged to bring something from their family’s 
past to discuss with other audience members as part of a “show-and-tell”

 introduction to the field of bioarchaeology and what it tells us about 
life and death in the past, with Jordan Wilson, bioarchaeologist, 
skeletal biologist, and postdoctoral fellow and lecturer at Georgetown 
University.
Gather among the living to learn how lessons are taught by the dead.
Join Dr. Jordan Wilson of Georgetown University to dig into the field
 of bioarchaeology, a science that combines knowledge of human skeletal 
anatomy with that of past cultures and treatment of the body after 
death.
Covering bioarchaeology’s history, she’ll describe how researchers 
first realized that skeletons could be every bit as important to our 
understanding of the past as artifacts displayed in museums. She’ll also
 discuss how early research on human skeletal remains unfortunately 
became intertwined with research in eugenics.
She also will give you an understanding of bioarchaeologists’ 
methods, teaching you how they determine the age, biological sex, and 
ancestry of the deceased from their bones. You’ll learn how they 
identify various traumatic injuries, from broken arms to scimitar cuts, 
as well as evidence of repetitive actions to gain insight into daily 
activities. Past health problems are identifiable from the scars left on
 bones by illnesses such as rickets, scurvy, tuberculosis, and anemia.
We’ll examine some famous bioarchaeology cases and look at what 
movies get wrong about mummies and the field of archaeology in general. 
We’ll also look at how human remains research is used for good, by 
identifying the missing, solving cold cases, and supporting tribal 
sovereignty.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Profs and Pints Northern Virginia</a> presents: “The Road to Mass Surveillance,”
 on the proliferation of automated license plate readers and the threats
 that they pose to our freedoms, with Steven Keener, a leading 
researcher on such devices as an assistant professor of criminology and 
director of the Center for Crime, Equity, and Justice Research and 
Policy at Christopher Newport University.
Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) cameras have popped up 
throughout the country, with Flock Safety emerging as the predominant 
producer. They capture images of every passing vehicle and feed that 
data into centralized databases, giving tremendous power to track our 
movements on the road to both the government agencies that use them and 
the private companies contracted to operate them.&nbsp;
Proponents of the technology praise it for helping to track stolen 
cars, felony suspects, and missing persons. But it also has been used by
 law enforcement officers to stalk ex-partners, and its misreads of 
license plates have led to false accusations of crimes. Data from the 
cameras have been shared with entities that are not supposed to be 
allowed access, and attempts have been made to use such data to track 
individuals attending protests or crossing state lines to access health 
care that their own state banned. People have hacked into the cameras 
and the data they gather and broadcast that information on YouTube.&nbsp;
Learn in depth about ALPR cameras and the debate over their use and 
regulation with Steven Keener, the lead author of the first geospatial 
analysis of this emerging technology, “Surveillance Inequality: Race, 
Poverty and the Geography of Automated License Plate Reader Cameras.”
Dr. Keener will provide an overview of how ALPR cameras operate, 
describing what images are captured of each passing vehicle, what 
happens to those images in the short term, the lifecycle of the data 
that the cameras collect, and how the cameras are operated jointly by 
local police and private surveillance companies.&nbsp;
He’ll offer insights on the comprehensive, expansive database that 
has been built using the images captured by ALPR cameras, describing 
where that information is stored, who has access to it, how long it can 
be accessed and for what reasons, and what happens when the dataset is 
tapped into for investigations and criminal cases. You’ll learn about 
where cameras are placed and about trends in their use.
Dr. Keener will look at the risks of such a comprehensive dataset of 
individuals' daily movement patterns and bring you up to speed on court 
cases challenging ALPR surveillance systems on grounds such as the 
Fourth Amendment’s prohibition of unreasonable search and seizure. We’ll
 look at rigorous debates at the local level over whether to maintain or
 cancel contracts with the private surveillance companies and at efforts
 by state lawmakers in Virginia and elsewhere to put guardrails on such 
technology.
Dr. Keener, a critic of ALPR systems who actively works with 
community organizations evaluating the cancellation of ALPR contracts, 
will equip talk attendees with the knowledge to engage in local

Night Hawk is an American indie rock band from Brunswick, Maine, now based in Washington, D.C. Originally a songwriting vehicle for Colter Adams and Peyton Semjen, the project has evolved into an acclaimed live act, earning a devoted following for its enchanting harmonies and clear-eyed lyricism.
Night Hawk’s music is defined by stark geometry and bold imagery, underpinned by crackling warmth and simmering tension. Drawing on themes of urban isolation, self-discovery amidst challenging transitions, and the catalogue of 20th century painter Edward Hopper, the band blends mellifluous violin and delicate finger-style guitar with the raw energy of barnstorming alternative rock, creating a sonic palette that is as expansive as it is emotionally precise.
The band has collaborated with the Whitney Museum and the Edward Hopper House on the Edward Hopper Recomposed concert series in Nyack, NY. Their debut album, Before We Begin, was produced by Colter Adams and Colin Miller (Indigo de Souza, Wednesday, MJ Lenderman).

Spirit of the Bear quickly became one of the most fresh and exciting bands to emerge in the Ohio music scene with their unique blend of indie rock, pop, and electronic sensibilities coupled with their affinity for pop song writing. The band’s years of musical experience are accentuated by their use of two keyboard players, bringing a unique depth to their sound.
