Drypoint is a direct and expressive way to make prints. You use a sharp tool to draw into a plate, and the burr from each scratch holds ink to create rich, velvety lines you won’t find in other mediums. There’s no need for acid, chemicals, or any previous printmaking experience.
In this beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll use plexiglass plates, which are easy to draw on and perfect for trying this technique for the first time. You’ll learn how to transfer an image onto your plate, create tone and texture with different marks, ink and wipe the plate, and use the press to make your first prints. We’ll go over how to prepare your plate, explore various mark-making methods, and cover the basics of making editions. By the end, you’ll have a finished plate and a small set of prints to take home.
This one-session workshop is a great way to start exploring intaglio printmaking, especially if you enjoy drawing or want an easy introduction to using a printing press.
