Arlington, VA– More than 50 artists will open their studios to the public the weekend of September 26 and 27, organizers announced.
his year will mark the ninth <a href="https://arlingtonartstudiotour.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Arlington Visual Art Studio Tour</a>, an opportunity for people to meet local artists and learn about their processes. Visitors can view the art of over 50 creative individuals who represent a wide range of styles and media. In addition to painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture, artists in the Arlington area are known for printmaking, photography, papercutting, letterpress, and jewelry. While there will be opportunities for visitors to purchase art, the Tour is foremost a community-building event that encourages visitors to discover and appreciate the artists in their neighborhood. The Arlington Visual Art Studio Tour depends on the efforts of independent artists, volunteers, and Arlington visual arts organizations. The 2026 Tour is made possible through the generosity of our sponsors, which include Fred Schnider Investment Group, Gerald &amp; Katherine Freshley, and Palette 22. 
The Tour will publish a guide and map with the names, locations and opening hours of participating artists. Printed copies will be available at community centers, arts venues, and libraries by early September. Those interested can also plan their route online: <a href="https://www.arlingtonartstudiotour.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">www.arlingtonartstudiotour.org/</a>. Studios in South Arlington will be open Sat., Sept. 26 (11 am – 5 pm), and studios in North Arlington will be open on Sun., Sept. 27 (11 am – 5 pm).
An exhibition at the Barry Gallery (Marymount University) will be presented in conjunction with the Tour from Sept. 3 through Oct. 28. Entitled “Off the Grid,” the show will bring together work by the Tour’s artists, highlighting the talent in our community.

Tuesdays, September 15,&nbsp; 22, 29 and October 6, 13, and 20 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. 
Every session starts with a meditation journey to emerge in our creative mind. This workshop series invites participants to engage with a variety of materials through guided, hands-on exercises.
The series is designed to encourage intuitive making, helping participants relax into the creative process without pressure or expectation. Through mindful exploration of texture, form, and composition, participants develop a deeper connection to their artistic voice. The focus is on process over outcome, creating a supportive space for experimentation, presence, and personal expression.
Drawing: Practice fast figure sketching and contour drawing from live model and still life. Using pencil, pen, and brush, participants build confidence in observation, gesture, and expressive line.
Painting: Explore color through intuitive brushwork. Exercises focus on loosening control, developing sensitivity to color relationships, and allowing spontaneous expression to guide the process.
Collage: Transform found materials, photographs, and text into layered, abstract narratives. Participants experiment with composition, fragmentation, and storytelling through juxtaposition.
Mixed Media: Combine drawing, painting, and collage to create dynamic, multimedia works. Incorporate unconventional materials such as fabric, paper, and metallic elements to expand texture and depth.
Monoprinting: Using acrylic paint on glass plates, participants will create expressive prints in both black &amp; white and color. Drawing inspiration from abstract expressionist artists, the process encourages accessing the subconscious and embracing spontaneity.
Assemblage: Take abstraction into three dimensions by assembling found objects, materials, and personal artifacts. Create sculptural compositions that tell a story or evoke emotion.

associate professor of medicine at the Georgetown University School of 
Medicine, founder and president of Sports &amp; Performance Cardiology, 
and chief medical officer for USA Swimming.
Most people think exercise is about losing weight, building muscle, 
or running faster. But what if the greatest benefit of exercise is 
something much bigger: Helping us live longer and better?
Join internationally recognized sports cardiologist Dr. Ankit Shah 
for an engaging look at the fascinating science connecting exercise, 
fitness, and longevity.&nbsp;
Drawing on research involving elite athletes, recreational 
exercisers, and everyday people, Dr. Shah will explore how exercise 
changes the heart, brain, muscles, and metabolism—and why these changes 
can have profound effects on our health as we age.
You’ll learn why cardiorespiratory fitness may be one of the most 
powerful predictors of long-term health. We’ll look at what the widely 
used VO2max test of blood oxygen levels during exercise can and cannot 
tell us about aging, and how exercise can protect against some of the 
diseases that become more common as we get older.&nbsp;
You’ll also discover whether there really is such a thing as “too 
much” exercise and how to find the right balance between training hard 
and recovering well.
Dr. Shah will discuss the optimal amount of exercise to live longer 
and how athletes get in trouble by assuming that being fit necessarily 
equals being healthy. He’ll talk about how, when it comes to determining
 our longevity, the reasons why we exercise can be every bit as 
important as the amount of exercise we get—a short run to stave off the 
urge to smoke or drink can pay off more than a long run followed by a 
cocktail and cigarette.

This class will focus on a combination of stitching techniques, Copic and French Link Stitch’s. We will explore decorative paper effects to the signature pages and incorporate fabric tapes and ribbons into the handmade book designs.
Day 1 : Design and Book Board Assembly: Design and prepare book covers. Demonstrate book binding stitching techniques and materials. We will discuss the Pros and Cons of different papers and threads that can be used for a stich book. Demonstrate paperfolding, cutting techniques, and pasting papers to the book covers.
Day 2: Signature and Board Preparation: Demonstrate folding, cutting and holes punching for signature pages. Ribbon and decorative elements will be reviewed and book structure design discussed.
Day 3: Assemble Book: Final day will be dedicated to stitching / assemble of your book. Step by Step Stitching instructions and final glueing instructions.

<a href="https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Profs and Pints Northern Virginia</a> presents: “The Victorians' Sexual Underworld,” on
 sex workers and queer communities in nineteenth century cities, with 
Andrew Israel Ross, associate professor and chair of history at Loyola 
University Maryland and author or editor of several books and articles 
on the history of prostitution, homosexuality, and policing in 
nineteenth century Paris.
We are living through a moral panic about the presence of sexual and 
gender diversity in our society, as evidenced by attacks on Pride month,
 calls to ban drag queen story hours, and governmental efforts to 
redefine sex and gender. Underlying such actions is a sense that the 
increasing prominence of queer and trans people in American society 
represents something new and unexpected, a deviation from a clear 
history of heterosexual and gender stability.&nbsp;
The reality, however, is that queer life—and sexual life broadly—used
 to be much more central to social life than it is today, especially in 
growing cities during the Industrial Revolution.
Come to Arlington’s Highline RxR beer hall to gain an eye-opening 
understanding of the history of sexual communities often seen as 
marginal in history–female sex workers, gay men and lesbians, and 
transgender people.
Dr. Andrew Ross, a historian of sexuality, will explain why public 
sex was so important to nineteenth century urban culture and how 
Victorians wrestled with evidence of sexual and gender diversity. 
Drawing from his intensive study of the history of Paris but also from 
research on London, Berlin, and New York during the Industrial Age, 
he’ll discuss the sexual ideology of the Victorians and how it gave 
substantial opportunities to people who faced a great deal of 
discrimination then and continue to face it now.
You’ll learn about the practice “regulationism,” which sought to 
manage the business of sex work so that heterosexual men could always 
have access to sex.&nbsp;
Then we’ll look at the queer male world – one that often intersected 
with that of female prostitutes – and the spaces where men found one 
another quite publicly. Dr. Ross will discuss the emergence of the first
 gay bars, which were opened (perhaps surprisingly) by women, and talk 
about how people who did not identify as either men or women navigated 
this world.&nbsp;
What happened to these cultures? The talk will conclude by focusing 
on a period between the World Wars characterized by incredible 
experimentation with sexual identity, community building and politics. 
We’ll look at how it came to an end with the rise of the Nazis in Europe

 an exploration of the cultural complexities of tourism and a guide to 
ensuring your visits to other places benefit all involved, with Melissa 
A. Stevens, principal at CultureSnap Consulting and adjunct professor of
 cultural anthropology at the University of Delaware.&nbsp;
Mark Twain once famously remarked that “travel is fatal to prejudice,
 bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” Indeed, it can open our minds to new 
ideas and possibilities, positively contribute to local communities, and
 help us establish lasting relationships with people across the world.&nbsp;
At the same time, however, our travels can be harmful to the people 
and places we visit and to our world as a whole. We can end up 
exploiting vulnerable populations, worsening global and local 
inequalities, accelerating climate change, and forever altering the 
places and cultures that we visit.&nbsp;
How are responsible tourists supposed to navigate these contradictions without ruining their vacation?&nbsp;
Explore the cultural complexities of what it means to travel, and 
find ways to ensure your conscience rests easy after full travel days, 
with the help of cultural anthropologist Melissa Stevens.&nbsp;
She’ll start by discussing how her own field has not always been a 
positive force in other parts of the world, and historically has 
committed some of the same sins as the tourism marketing industry when 
it comes to shaping Western perceptions of Non-Western cultures. Popular
 anthropologists such as Margaret Mead and Napoleon Chagnon contributed 
to the “exotification” and exploitation of indigenous peoples and local 
communities in ways that cast a shadow on their work.&nbsp;
In confronting the ethical implications of its early history, 
anthropology developed a perspective known as “cultural relativism,” 
which called upon anthropologists to build awareness of their own 
cultural assumptions as a means to engage more ethically and responsibly
 with the people and places they visited. Anyone, including tourists, 
can learn to have a culturally relativist mindset in their travels.&nbsp;
Dr. Stevens will discuss how anthropologists use cultural relativism 
to gain a deeper understanding of people and places. She’ll also talk 
about how anthropologists look at tourism through a cultural lens, 
diving into the politics of representation, of performance, and of 
authenticity, and also examining gendered experiences of tourism. We'll 
take a tour through the history of travel, from early pilgrims to 
digital nomads, and we’ll explore different types of tourism, including 
cultural tourism, ecotourism, sex and romance tourism, dark tourism, 
backpacking, and “voluntourism.”
We’ll consider the environmental and cultural impacts of tourism on 
tourist destinations. Drawing from her experiences conducting 
ethnographic research on cultural and sustainable tourism in Tanzania 
and Vietnam, Dr. Stevens will share immersive stories about what she 
learned in researching how tourism was perceived and experienced by the 
people who live with it.&nbsp;
