 introduction to the field of bioarchaeology and what it tells us about 
life and death in the past, with Jordan Wilson, bioarchaeologist, 
skeletal biologist, and postdoctoral fellow and lecturer at Georgetown 
University.
Gather among the living to learn how lessons are taught by the dead.
Join Dr. Jordan Wilson of Georgetown University to dig into the field
 of bioarchaeology, a science that combines knowledge of human skeletal 
anatomy with that of past cultures and treatment of the body after 
death.
Covering bioarchaeology’s history, she’ll describe how researchers 
first realized that skeletons could be every bit as important to our 
understanding of the past as artifacts displayed in museums. She’ll also
 discuss how early research on human skeletal remains unfortunately 
became intertwined with research in eugenics.
She also will give you an understanding of bioarchaeologists’ 
methods, teaching you how they determine the age, biological sex, and 
ancestry of the deceased from their bones. You’ll learn how they 
identify various traumatic injuries, from broken arms to scimitar cuts, 
as well as evidence of repetitive actions to gain insight into daily 
activities. Past health problems are identifiable from the scars left on
 bones by illnesses such as rickets, scurvy, tuberculosis, and anemia.
We’ll examine some famous bioarchaeology cases and look at what 
movies get wrong about mummies and the field of archaeology in general. 
We’ll also look at how human remains research is used for good, by 
identifying the missing, solving cold cases, and supporting tribal 
sovereignty.&nbsp;

 that they pose to our freedoms, with Steven Keener, a leading 
researcher on such devices as an assistant professor of criminology and 
director of the Center for Crime, Equity, and Justice Research and 
Policy at Christopher Newport University.
Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) cameras have popped up 
throughout the country, with Flock Safety emerging as the predominant 
producer. They capture images of every passing vehicle and feed that 
data into centralized databases, giving tremendous power to track our 
movements on the road to both the government agencies that use them and 
the private companies contracted to operate them.&nbsp;
Proponents of the technology praise it for helping to track stolen 
cars, felony suspects, and missing persons. But it also has been used by
 law enforcement officers to stalk ex-partners, and its misreads of 
license plates have led to false accusations of crimes. Data from the 
cameras have been shared with entities that are not supposed to be 
allowed access, and attempts have been made to use such data to track 
individuals attending protests or crossing state lines to access health 
care that their own state banned. People have hacked into the cameras 
and the data they gather and broadcast that information on YouTube.&nbsp;
Learn in depth about ALPR cameras and the debate over their use and 
regulation with Steven Keener, the lead author of the first geospatial 
analysis of this emerging technology, “Surveillance Inequality: Race, 
Poverty and the Geography of Automated License Plate Reader Cameras.”
Dr. Keener will provide an overview of how ALPR cameras operate, 
describing what images are captured of each passing vehicle, what 
happens to those images in the short term, the lifecycle of the data 
that the cameras collect, and how the cameras are operated jointly by 
local police and private surveillance companies.&nbsp;
He’ll offer insights on the comprehensive, expansive database that 
has been built using the images captured by ALPR cameras, describing 
where that information is stored, who has access to it, how long it can 
be accessed and for what reasons, and what happens when the dataset is 
tapped into for investigations and criminal cases. You’ll learn about 
where cameras are placed and about trends in their use.
Dr. Keener will look at the risks of such a comprehensive dataset of 
individuals' daily movement patterns and bring you up to speed on court 
cases challenging ALPR surveillance systems on grounds such as the 
Fourth Amendment’s prohibition of unreasonable search and seizure. We’ll
 look at rigorous debates at the local level over whether to maintain or
 cancel contracts with the private surveillance companies and at efforts
 by state lawmakers in Virginia and elsewhere to put guardrails on such 
technology.
Dr. Keener, a critic of ALPR systems who actively works with 
community organizations evaluating the cancellation of ALPR contracts,

Pochoir (from the French word for "stencil") is the traditional printmaking method using intricate hand-cut stencils and brushes to apply layers of vibrant color, yielding prints rich with textures and colors.
Learn the basics of a modernized version of the classical pochoir method for printmaking! By the end of this class, you will have not only a beautiful series of handmade prints but all the skills necessary to continue making pochoir prints at home for years to come!
Through this class, students will learn:
- How to create and divide an image into separate color layers
- How to hand-cut intricate stencils using “bridges”
- Methods for registration and alignment of printed layers
- Methods for inking stencils to create areas of solid ink or ombre patterns
- The process of editioning a series of prints
Syllabus:
Week one:
- Learn a brief history of pochoir printmaking and look at examples
- Receive an overview of the entire process
- Create a design and separate color layers
- Begin cutting Dura-Lar stencils
Week two:
- Finish cutting Dura-Lar stencils
- Receive a demonstration about how to ink
- Begin printing initial color layers
Week Three
- Finish printing pochoir prints
- Edition series of prints and optional trade!

Modern Pochoir Printmaking with Theresa Provasnik (3 Sessions)

<a href="https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Profs and Pints DC</a> presents: “George Washington and the Civil War,” on
 how all sides of a nation-dividing conflict enlisted a long-dead 
founding father, with Anne Sarah Rubin, a professor of history at the 
University of Maryland, Baltimore County who specializes in the study of
 nationalism and memory during the American Civil War.&nbsp;
George Washington died in December 1799, more than sixty years before
 the American Civil War began. Yet in 1860 he seemed to be everywhere, 
embraced by abolitionists and slaveholders, Unionists and Confederates 
alike as a mythical symbol of their own righteousness. All drew on the 
image and iconography of George Washington and the American Revolution 
to claim legitimacy for their respective sides.
Gain insight into how our nation’s history and memory has long been 
weaponized to support disparate causes with Anne Sarah Rubin, an author 
of two books on the Civil War who has given great talks in Baltimore on 
the war’s impact on that city.
Dr. Rubin will describe how memories—both actual and cultural—of 
Washington and the revolution diverged in ways that reflected divisions 
over slavery. Slaveholders and abolitionists each laid claim to the 
parts of the past that they could use and discarded the rest.
The memory of the Founders and the Revolution was malleable. Homages 
to their wisdom and the republican experiment they created could be read
 as conservative. Calls for greater equality could be read in the 
Revolution’s spirit. Washington was portrayed as a benevolent master in
 one popular engraving and as an emancipator in another.
Each side used images, songs, and stories to make their case. When 
the war broke out, Confederates eagerly seized upon popular songs like 
“Yankee Doodle” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” and rewrote them to serve
 their own ends, calling Union soldiers “Hessians” or “Tories” and 
praising the Stars and Bars as the better flag.
With the end of the war and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, 
Northerners united the two presidents in death, even proposing that 
Lincoln be buried at Mount Vernon. That presidential home itself became a

Wednesday, August 5 to 26th from 4 to 6 P.M.Budget frames cost $200-$300 and high-quality frames cost $400-$800. For any artist, framing is always a pervasive problem and sometimes a crippling cost. Fortunately, with a little bit of knowledge and the right tools and materials, it doesn’t have to be you can build the highest possible quality frame for approximately $80. This class will cover everything from basic woodworking with hand tools to cutting glass to archival matting for artwork. By the end of this class, you will have a complete frame and all of the knowledge you need to make your own frames going forward.
Please note: Students will be expected to bring their own artwork to frame. Artwork must be under&nbsp;20” x 26”. The price of the class reflects the cost of artwork framed with UV protective glass.&nbsp;The maximum dimension frame that glass is practical is 24” x 30”.
If any artist is interested in larger, the price of class will be adjusted to reflect the cost of UV Plexi.
For classes, a syllabus: 4 Weeks
Week 1: Cut and Glue Frame stock.
Week 2: Finish Frame stock &amp; cut mat board.
Week 3: Cut glass, cut spacers, Cut strainer.
Week 4: Mount artwork, Cut Backing, &amp; Assemble frame.

Night Hawk is an American indie rock band from Brunswick, Maine, now based in Washington, D.C. Originally a songwriting vehicle for Colter Adams and Peyton Semjen, the project has evolved into an acclaimed live act, earning a devoted following for its enchanting harmonies and clear-eyed lyricism.
Night Hawk’s music is defined by stark geometry and bold imagery, underpinned by crackling warmth and simmering tension. Drawing on themes of urban isolation, self-discovery amidst challenging transitions, and the catalogue of 20th century painter Edward Hopper, the band blends mellifluous violin and delicate finger-style guitar with the raw energy of barnstorming alternative rock, creating a sonic palette that is as expansive as it is emotionally precise.
The band has collaborated with the Whitney Museum and the Edward Hopper House on the Edward Hopper Recomposed concert series in Nyack, NY. Their debut album, Before We Begin, was produced by Colter Adams and Colin Miller (Indigo de Souza, Wednesday, MJ Lenderman).
Their E.P. "Somewhere, Anywhere," is out on all platforms on May 30, 2026.

Spirit of the Bear quickly became one of the most fresh and exciting bands to emerge in the Ohio music scene with their unique blend of indie rock, pop, and electronic sensibilities coupled with their affinity for pop song writing. The band’s years of musical experience are accentuated by their use of two keyboard players, bringing a unique depth to their sound. Consisting of James Harker (lead vocals, guitar), Danny Svenson (keyboards), Ethan Schwendeman (keyboards), Nate Gelfand (Bass), and Jamie Vitullo (Drums), the band has shared the stage with acts such as Crowded House, Our Lady Peace, Ra Ra Riot, and Robert DeLong, among others.
