Wednesday, October 28 th to November 18 from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M.
Budget frames cost $200-$300 and high-quality frames cost $400-$800. For any artist, framing is always a pervasive problem and sometimes a crippling cost. Fortunately, with a little bit of knowledge and the right tools and materials, it doesn’t have to be you can build the highest possible quality frame for approximately $80. This class will cover everything from basic woodworking with hand tools to cutting glass to archival matting for artwork. By the end of this class, you will have a complete frame and all of the knowledge you need to make your own frames going forward.
Please note: Students will be expected to bring their own artwork to frame. Artwork must be under&nbsp;20” x 26”. The price of the class reflects the cost of artwork framed with UV protective glass.&nbsp;The maximum dimension frame that glass is practical is 24” x 30”.
If any artist is interested in larger, the price of class will be adjusted to reflect the cost of UV Plexi.
For classes, a syllabus: 4 Weeks
Week 1: Cut and Glue Frame stock.
Week 2: Finish Frame stock &amp; cut mat board.
Week 3: Cut glass, cut spacers, Cut strainer.
Week 4: Mount artwork, Cut Backing, &amp; Assemble frame.

Have you ever wondered how and why the impressionist painted the way they did?&nbsp;
Would you like to learn to paint like an impressionist yourself?
Around the turn of the 20th century, there were dramatic changes in the art world. Where previous generations of artists once favored rigid techniques and spending thousands of hours in studios glazing hundreds of layers of paint, now artists aspired to create more immediate paintings and tried to more directly capture the world they saw.
This class, meant for students at all skill levels, will start from the ground up teaching students how to mix colors like the impressionists and introduce students to various techniques that evolved in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
All supplies are included with the class as students will be encouraged to try out different paints, brushes, and other painting materials throughout the class.&nbsp;

Explore dry point technique to create your monoprint artwork. In this class we will discuss image composition and combining drawing, texture, and form to create a monoprint of your image.
Students should to bring their sketchbook and multiple images (landscape, still life, portrait, abstract, photograph, etc.) and ideas to review for their first print. Black and white images, preferred. Artwork should be sized to 6x8. Students will be expected to work on their own during the course. No experience necessary.

<a href="https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Profs and Pints DC</a>&nbsp;presents: “Facing Fascism,” on the history, hallmarks, and lingering power of a deadly ideology, with Kevin Matthews, professor of history at George Mason University and teacher of courses on early 20th century European history.
Few political movements have aroused as much anger and fear as fascism. But despite its legacy of violence, persecution, and genocide, fascism continues to hold a strange attraction to many.
Join historian Kevin Matthews for an in-depth look at an ideology that brought death to millions in Europe and yet continues to deeply influence our politics and culture.
In an encore staging of a talk that earned rave reviews at Penn Social last spring, Dr. Matthews will start by discussing how the ideology of fascism arose in the aftermath of the First World War and took hold in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s.
To give you a better grasp of what exactly fascism is, he’ll discuss its central themes: Anti-democracy. Extreme nationalism and anti-communism. The use, or threat, of violence in politics. Rejection of established values such as scientific objectivity. Denial of equal rights, especially for women. The assertion of power where a power vacuum exists.
We’ll examine the rise and fall of two notorious fascist dictators, Adolf Hitler of Germany and Benito Mussolini of Italy. For a time it was believed that fascism died in the ashes of the Second World War, but it clearly didn’t, and we’ll look at where it remains a political force today.
Finally, we’ll examine how fascism continues to permeate popular culture in ways that trivialize it, popping up in music from punk to Madonna, with its latent eroticism making it the subject of films such as The Night Porter. Having been called “the most self-consciously visual of all political forms,” it enlisted fashion leaders to produce uniforms and continues today to inspire a look known as “Nazi chic.”
Dr. Matthews also has given fantastic Profs and Pints talks on Ireland’s fight for independence and on World War II German submarine attacks off our coasts. He’s sure to leave you with a much better understanding of fascism and a recognition that is has hardly gone away. <a href="https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Profs and Pints DC</a> presents: “Presidents Before Washington,” on the first version of the United States and the men who led it, with Mark Croatti, a political science instructor at George Washington University and teacher of early American history at the U.S. Naval Academy.
In a year when we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, it’s worth keeping in mind that our nation’s political system did not always exist in its current form. In fact, from 1776 until the 1789 ratification of the U.S. Constitution people here lived under an economic and military alliance of states in many ways more closely resembling today’s European Union.
Learn about this fascinating period of our nation’s history, and how we might learn from it lessons that could help us deal with some of today’s challenges, with Mark Croatti, who teaches courses on American government and history at several local universities and is consistently rated by his students as someone they’d love to take classes from again.
We’ll go on a scholarly journey back in time to examine life in the United States under the Articles of Confederation, which called for the nation to be governed by an appointed, unicameral Congress led by men who held the title of “President” and were sometimes addressed as “His Excellency.”
You’ll become familiar with the men who were recognized as U.S. presidents before George Washington took office. You’ll learn about the nation’s first peacetime capital and how our nation’s Founders first envisioned its government functioning.
We’ll examine how the lack of a Congress with unilateral power to raise taxes left our early alliance of states unable to pay off its immense Revolutionary War debt, creating the need to come up with a new political system that could raise the money.&nbsp;
It’s a talk that will leave you with a much richer understanding of our nation’s history and how governments restructure from within.
