Capitol Lockdown Lifted After Shooting Saturday
Capitol Police say man shot himself; police also investigated a suspicious package in connection with incident.

The U.S. Capitol was on lockdown and surrounding roads were closed Saturday afternoon after a man fatally shot himself just after 1 p.m., according to media reports, including The Washington Post.
The Capitol was on lockdown for about two hours while police investigated the shooting and a suspicious package related to the incident.
A U.S. Capitol Police spokesperson told The Post the shooter had been “neutralized” on the West Front of the building, and the lockdown was a precautionary measure.

NBC-4 reported: “US Capitol Police: Confirmed: self-inflicted gunshot by neutralized subject.” ABC News reports the subject had a sign taped to his hand.
The police investigated the suspicious package on the lower West Terrace, according to NBC News.

At 3 p.m, the Senate Sergeant at Arms office said that due to lockdown, the following streets were closed around the Capitol: 1st St (Independence Avenue, SW-Constitution Avenue, NW), Maryland Avenue, SW (1st-3rd Sts, SW), Pennsylvania Avenue, NW (1st-3rd Sts, NW).
The lockdown was lifted roughly two hours after the man shot himself.
