Good news for cat lovers: Georgetown may soon have the region’s first ‘cat café,’ where patrons can get coffee and refreshments and play with cats. Founder Kanchan Singh hopes to open Crumbs & Whiskers, an establishment where people can mingle with cats that are up for adoption by the Washington Humane Society.

Opting for crowdfunding to finance the start up, Singh exceeded her $15,000 fundraising goal on Kickstarter in the first 24 hours, which began last Sunday.

This is just the first step toward getting the business up and running. Singh also needs to finalize a lease for a space, which reportedly she is hoping to get at 3211 O Street, NW in Georgetown, according to ElevationDC.

To be able to have cats at the business, Singh needs to obtain an exception from the DC Board of Zoning Adjustment and get approval by the Department of Health. A public hearing is pending, according to DC Eater.

Technically, Crumbs and Whiskers will be a foster home for cats housed at the Washington Humane Society. Customers will pay a cover charge to enter the establishment and get free food and drinks while playing with the cats.

If all goes as planned, Crumbs & Whiskers will open its doors this summer.
