D.C. Population Growth Outpaces All Other States
D.C. led the nation with its 2.7 percent population growth between April 2010 and July 2011; Texas gained more people than any other state.

D.C. saw the greatest population increase by percentage of current population among all states and equivalents since the official 2010 Census. The District's population as of July 1, 2011 was 617,996, meaning it increased by 2.7 percent since the April 2010.
Texas was next with a 2.1 percent increase, adding 529,000 people. This was the first time since the 1940s that D.C. led the pack in population growth by percentage of current population.
In a press release, Mayor Vincent Gray said, "It’s no secret that the District is one of the most dynamic cities in the country and that we have made significant efforts to grow and diversify our economy. It certainly looks like those efforts are working.”

“I am delighted about the District’s continued growth,” said Harriet Tregoning, Director of the D.C. Office of Planning in a press release. “I think it reflects the simple fact that every day the District is becoming a more desirable place to live, work, learn and play.”
According to the Census Bureau website, the U.S. saw its population increase by 2.8 million for a growth of 0.92 percent, making it the lowest since the mid-1940s before the baby boom.
