DC is Sixth Worst City for Renters

Vibrant metropolitan areas across the country offer jobs and new businesses at a time when the rest of the country struggles through the aftermath of a recession. But living in many of those same cities comes with a price: high rent. The DC area came in sixth on the Forbes "Worst Cities for Renters" list.

The average rent in the DC area is $1,419 and that's up 2.6 percent from last year, according to Forbes.

Georgetown is no stranger to high rents; the name itself carries a cache for renters, especially those new to DC.

A quick search on Craigslist for Georgetown rentals results in rents that are higher than the DC average. The first five properties in the search results ranged from $1,295 to $4,270, though none of the listings is actually located in Georgetown proper. Instead they are in Glover Park or located on MacArthur Boulevard in the Palisades.

The one positive note for renters? It is still $205 cheaper to rent than to own in DC, according to Forbes.
