DC Police: Alexandria Man Dead After Shooting During A.M. Commute

Two adults in black SUV that was hit on northbound I-295 were likely traveling from Virginia into DC during morning rush hour, police say.

DC Police were on the scene Thursday morning of a fatal shooting on northbound I-295 in southwestern DC initially described by police as a road rage incident, according to police.

Police identified the victim as Pedro Melendez Alvarado, 50, of Alexandria, according to a report by The Washington Post. A shooter in another car reportedly followed Alvarado’s car, a black SUV, from Virginia into DC, police said.

Another occupant of the black SUV was being treated at a local hospital after a person in another car opened fire at about 8:45 a.m. on the occupants of the black SUV, according to DC Police.

The incident took place near the Naval Research Laboratory Exit, according to police.

DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier was initially calling the incident a case of road rage. “It’s all preliminary but that’s what we have right now,” she said in a news conference Thursday morning. She said that if anyone saw the incident and originally called police Thursday morning to please call back again.

I-295 northbound was closed for several hours during the police investigation of the incident.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen the car that fired the shots contact police immediately with any details.
