Former Georgetown Librarian Leaves DCPL, Takes Position in Loudoun County

Popular manager Tracy Sumler was in January and this week moved on to a position with Loudoun County libraries. Georgetown received a new library manager in January, Laura Gonzalez, but as of Monday she has been transferred and now librarian Lucy Thrasher is at the helm at Georgetown.

The Georgetown community learned of Sumler's relocation in December. At the time several residents, including local parent Ken Archer, asked District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) to keep Sumler, a Glover Park resident, in place as she was a favorite among parents and children. The handful of requests did not impact what library officials called a private personnel decision.

However, DCPL officials are confident that Sumler did not leave the D.C. system because of her transfer from Georgetown.

"She left to be able to continue working with Chang Liu, the new director of the Loudoun County Public Library," said Nancy Davenport, the director of library services for DCPL, in an email sent to Archer.

Liu served as the associate director for neighborhood library services in D.C.

In the email Davenport added that Sumler will have greater responsibility at the Cascades Library in Potomac Falls, Virginia, where she will manage 29 people at a library open seven days a week.

Georgetown's new addition, Lucy Thrasher, had been the children's librarian and manager at the Palisades for 18 years. Thrasher is a long-time Georgetown resident.
