Former White House Chef Missing in New Mexico Mountains: Reports

Walter Scheib, who worked for the Clintons and the Bushes, went missing last weekend on solo hike, according to reports.

Former White House chef Walter S. Scheib III is missing in the mountains of New Mexico, after going on a solo hike last weekend, according to news reports.

Scheib, 61, was reported missing Tuesday by his girlfriend after he failed to meet her on Monday, according to a report by the Daily Mail and other media reports. Scheib reportedly took off for a solo hike in the mountains, near Taos, according to NBC News. Scheib’s car was found Tuesday at the Yerba Canyon trailhead and his cellphone signal was tracked to Taos Ski Valley, authorities told NBC. The Daily Mail reports that Scheib was going fishing.

Helicopters, K-9s and horses are being used in the search.

Walter Scheib is the father of two sons, Walter and Jim. Scheib reportedly has a home in Great Falls, according to a listing on WhitePages.com. The Daily Mail reports he recently moved from Florida to Taos.

Scheib is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and is the owner of The American Chef, offering culinary talks and special culinary events. He was the executive chef at the White House during the Clinton years and for a few years with President George Bush and first lady Laura Bush. He was hired in 1994 by Hillary Clinton, who was first lady at the time. He is the author of “White House Chef: Eleven Years, Two Presidents, One Kitchen.”
