George Washington University Student Missing in South Africa

Connecticut native on rowing team was swimming Sunday during a break in a study abroad program, in Cape Town, South Africa.

As classes begin Monday at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. the university reports that a George Washington University student went missing this weekend overseas, after taking a break from a study abroad program, the university said in a statement.

“Our study abroad program partner in Cape Town, South Africa has notified GW that one of our students traveling during a break in the program is missing,” said Vice Provost and Dean of Student Affairs Peter Konwerski in a statement released by the university.

The university reports that Nicholas Upton, who goes by Nick, a junior at the university, has not been seen since swimming in the East Cape Province on Sunday at approximately 10:30 p.m.

A native of Redding, Connecticut, Upton is a student in GW’s Elliott School of International Affairs, a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and a member of the rowing team.

His fraternity, Kappa Alpha Order at George Washington University, posted this message on their Facebook page:

“One of our brothers, Nick Upton, has recently gone missing in South Africa. He was last seen swimming near Cape Town and was pulled out by a rip current. If you know anything about what happened to Nick, where he may be, or anyone who can aid in the search PLEASE send us a message.

Nick is a Junior and member of the Men’s Rowing Team in addition to being a brother of KA.

Local authorities in Cape Town are conducting a search and are coordinating with program representatives, his family and the U.S. Embassy, the university said.

“We are closely monitoring this situation and are in touch with his family. We continue to hope and pray for Nicholas’ safe return,” Konwerski said.
