Georgetown BID Has Big Plans for K Street / Water Street Corridor

Officials held a meeting at the waterfront Saturday to discuss the proposed improvements.

The Georgetown Business Improvement District held a meeting at the waterfront Saturday to discuss K Street bike, auto and pedestrian improvements -- and the organization has big plans that could dramatically change the area.

The Georgetown BID, in partnership with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and other local partners, want a "connected, accessible and multi-modal transportation system is vital to the economic success of Georgetown," and they believe the K Street/Water Street corridor is "well positioned to play a significant role in the area's long-term economic growth," according to the website.

The Georgetown BID is conducting a study that focuses on improving how accessible the corridor is for bicyclists and pedestrians as part of its Georgetown 2028 15 Year Action Plan.

The draft conceptual plan makes the following recommendations:

  • Improve linkages between two of the highest volume multi-use bicycle and pedestrian trails in the region: the Capital Crescent and Rock Creek Trails
  • Improve public space between 34th Street and the Aqueduct Bridge
  • Improve the environment for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other transportation modes
  • Integrate plans for the DC Streetcar and new boathouses planned for the future

There are two options in the concept plan: an interim option that could be completed in the short term at a low cost, and a longer-term option that accommodates future planned uses.
