GEORGETOWN, DC — On Thursday, 31st Street between M Street and South Street NW will be closed, District Department of Transportation officials said. The road will be closed between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., so construction crews can replace the 31st Street Bridge.

According to officials, the structurally deficient bridge — which spans the C & O Canal — is supported on stone masonry abutment walls and an 1867 cast iron, multi-column pier. On Thursday, the existing historic pier will be removed, restored, and reset.

"There will be flaggers onsite to facilitate traffic movement," transportation officials said in a statement. "Parking, local deliveries, and pedestrian and bike traffic will be maintained at all times."
