Giant Panda Bao Bao's Birthday Party is Aug. 23

Bao Bao, the National Zoo’s celebrated Giant Panda born last year, celebrates her first birthday on Aug. 23.

Some facts we’ve gathered about Bao Bao, from the National Zoo:

One of her favorite activities is sleeping high in a tree.

One of her favorite treats is frozen “fruitsicles.”

Favorite toy: Pink “jolly ball”

Want to celebrate the big day at the zoo? Here’s the scoop on Bao Bao’s birthday party, from the National Zoo:

YOU ARE INVITED: Come and celebrate Bao Bao’s first birthday with special activities, entertainment, and giveaways for all to enjoy. Be sure to wish Bao Bao a happy birthday by decorating a birthday card, taking home a commemorative coloring sheet, and sampling Chinese noodles!

DATE: Aug. 23, 2014

TIME: Private Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) member viewing from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by a public celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

LOCATION: Members meet across from the Visitor’s Center at the upper entrance of Asia Trail.

The public celebration will be held at Clint Fields Plaza and around the panda yards, both in the upper and lower viewing areas.

GIFTS: Members will receive commemorative panda party hats and a free game download from savingpandas.com. Members will also receive a piece of birthday cake courtesy of Giant Food, as well as other delicious giveaways.

Visitors will receive fun treats and samples throughout the day from our birthday celebration partners including the Chinese Embassy that will be sampling noodles. Long noodles are traditionally eaten by the person celebrating his or her birthday, as they symbolize long life in Chinese culture. Cool off in the Bearitos Bear Habitat and sample Bearitos snacks, and stop by the FedEx tent to create a birthday card for Bao Bao! FedEx will deliver the cards to the National Zoo’s panda keepers.

As part of the “Share a Coke” campaign, The Coca-Cola Company will offer free, limited-edition mini-cans personalized with guests’ names. Kids can also take home a commemorative giant panda coloring sheet, courtesy of the Ford Motor Company.
