UPDATE: Suspicious Package Cleared on M Street: Police
Streets around the scene were tied up near M Street between 18th and 19th streets NW, according to D.C. Police.

A suspicious package Monday on M Street between 18th and 19th streets tied up in the afternoon while officials from Washington, D.C. Fire and Rescue Department checked it out, according to DC Police.
Police and fire officials have now cleared the area, DC Police said in a message on Twitter.
Earlier, D.C. Police posted the following message to Twitter: “Suspicious Pkg. 1800 M St NW”

The activity closed several streets surrounding the area:
- Southbound 1100-1200 block of 19th St NW – No vehicular
- Westbound 1800 b/o M St NW – No pedestrian
A photo posted to social media by Popville showed several officers and HazMat trucks on the scene.

Popville reported that the package is “off gassing” and has made six people ill. One report mentions a USPS mailbox.
More than 50 blue USPS mail boxes have been removed for the Pope’s visit.
Most of the activity was near 18th and M streets NW.
