Luke's Lobster Comes Home to Georgetown

Luke's Lobster, the Maine lobster roll eatery, is coming to Georgetown Aug. 23, taking over the former Philadelphia Pizza Co./Go Fresh space at 1211 Potomac St., NW.

News of the seafood restaurant's arrival in Georgetown was first reported by The Washington Post.

Luke's Lobster was founded by Georgetown University 2007 graduate, Luke Holden in New York in 2009. When the Georgetown location opens he will have nine franchises, three in the DC area, according to the company website.

“It’s with extreme excitement that we get to offer the community our food,” Holden said in an interview with The Washington Post, “Georgetown just means the world to me.”

The space on Potomac Street, most recently Go Fresh and formerly Philadelphia Pizza Co., has been a less than welcome neighbor for nearby residents. In 2009, neighbors and the ANC organized against Philadelphia Pizza Co. (Philly P) because of the late night pizza crowds it drew when the bars closed. It was ultimately shut down in 2010 by the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs with no small push from the community.

Now the space takes on new life as Luke's Lobster's Georgetown location, which will be on two levels and can seat 25, making it Luke's largest yet.

"The whitewashed clapboard house at 1211 looks as though it was transplanted directly from a Maine lobster dock. Luke’s first two-story location will have room to satisfy neighbors and students alike amid lobster gear from his old boat," according to a press release about the Georgetown store.

The social media-savvy restaurant confirmed its Georgetown grand opening date of Aug. 23 in a tweet sent Wednesday morning, "It's true! We're opening on 8/23!"
