Meet the Jesters

Ever wonder if you’re your child’s jester? It was something that certainly crossed my mind as Husband and I sat in Flash’s room during our bedtime routine the other night. I don’t know about you, but with Flash, older equals longer bedtime routine (not the correlation I had in mind). Usually the routine is as follows: one of us reads and sings, and then the next one is hailed in to do the same. But not this night. We both sat on the floor with our child as he delegated instructions, “First, Mommy, you read Smash and Crash. Then, Daddy, you read The Wheels on the Bus. You guys think you can do that?” I couldn’t believe what came out of his mouth. That was the moment I knew... Flash ruled us. Before that telling moment, Husband and I were sitting on the floor singing “Twinkle Twinkle” in tired and monotone voices after a tiring day, and I truly felt like a jester. I was hoping my performance was good enough to please “my king” enough to put him in a deep slumber. So now I wonder- are we spoiling him, or are we just doing our job?
