New Musical About Tennessee Williams at Arena Stage
A new musical about Tennessee Williams, his transformation from shy Thomas Lanier to the famous creative genius, opens at Arena Stage in DC.
The play opens with old Tennessee Williams in New Orleans in 1981, over-medicated and too far into the afternoon, drunk and struggling to write. He nods off and is taunted by his iconic characters...
This musical play about the life of Tennessee Williams—the complex, driven, flamboyant and prolific genius who created many of the seminal works of the American stage and screen—explores his family archetypes, his agent and his longtime companion and how they gave rise to his indelible characters. The time of the play spans the great arc of the writer’s life: beginning when Williams is 7 years old to 2 years before his death at the age of seventy-two.
The show is unlike anything you may have seen before, spanning almost a century of theatrical and cinematic history, as a talented cast of local favorites tell the behind-the-scenes story of Tennessee Williams. The music, composed by Paul Leavitt, covers a wide range in the American canon, from ballads, ragtime, Dixieland, rhythm & blues and full-on Broadway musical numbers.

Even if you’ve seen TOM TO TENN, the previous version of the script, this iteration of the script and score will be new to you: bright, raw, and painstakingly re-written with the guidance of Arena Stage’s dramaturg and their fantastic director Matt Cowart.
