The National Zoo closed early Monday, at 3 p.m., and will remain closed “until it is safe for visitors” on Tuesday.

This photo is of the zoo’s lion Luke, taken two months ago when snow was falling in DC. Here’s a description from the zoo’s Instagram account:
“In this photo Luke looks up at snowflakes gently falling around him. Lions can tolerate cold temperatures-the African savannah can be a very cold place at night-but our lions always have the option to spend time in heated dens or inside on very cold days.”
