Relief Promised for 'Third-world' R Street Alley

The District Department of Transportation has big plans for an R Street NW alley one resident described as "nearly third-world," The Georgetown Current reports. 

The alley, which is off of R Street between 31st and 32nd Streets, NW, is rife with potholes. But just filling the potholes and repaving failed to improve the situation in 2011, The Georgetown Current reports.

Additionally, repaving the alley would create a cascade of water, flowing from the top of the alley down into the homes at the end.

“That’s not an acceptable solution to anybody. What we’re working on right now ... is a complete redesign of the alley that would include a tie-in to the stormwater system, so it would be a completely improved alley with drainage,” DDOT Spokesman John Lisle told The Georgetown Current.

Now DDOT is working with the D.C. Water and Sewer Authority to make the alley work for everyone. They hope to hire an engineering team in the following weeks.
