Report: DC to Vote on Legalizing Marijuana

The initiative if passed would allow anyone 21+ older to possess up to 2 ounces of marijuana.

Will marijuana become legal in DC? We’ll soon find out. DC residents will vote on legalizing marijuana in November, the Associated Press reported on Wednesday.

The D.C. Board of Elections voted today (Wednesday) to add the marijuana initiative to the ballot in the fall.

The initiative if passed — would allow anyone 21 and up to possess up to 2 ounces of marijuana and to grow marijuana (but only a few plants at a time, not a whole farm).

Mayor Gray signed a decriminalization law recently that makes possession of less than an ounce of marijuana a civil offense which carries a fine of $25.

Not everyone is on board. Congressman Andy Harris (R-Md.) hopes to pass legislation that would keep DC from spending money to liberalize marijuana laws.
