Traffic Advisory For Nov. 11 - Nov. 17: DDOT

From the District Department of Transportation (DDOT):

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will temporarily close lanes, ramps and shoulders on the following roadways to perform construction activities along and near the I-295 / DC 295 corridor.

The following lanes, ramp, and shoulder closures will be in place daily from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, Sunday, November 11, 2018, through Saturday, November 17, 2018, weather permitting.

• I-295 northbound left or right shoulder between Laboratory Road / US Naval Research Lab (Exit 1) and Malcolm X Avenue / JBAB (Exit 2)
• I-295 northbound single left or right lane between Malcolm X Avenue / JBAB (Exit 2) to I-695 (Exit 5A)
• DC 295 southbound single right lane between East Capitol Street and I-695 (Exits 1B-C)
• I-295 southbound single left or right lane between I-695 (Exits 1B-C) and South Capitol Street / Malcolm X Avenue / JBAB (Exit 2)
• I-295 southbound left or right shoulder between South Capitol Street / Malcolm X Avenue / JBAB (Exit 2) and US Naval Research Lab / DC Water / Blue Plains (Exit 1)
• South Capitol Street, SE/SW northbound single left or right lane between Firth Sterling Avenue, SE and N Street, SE
• Suitland Parkway, SE single left or right lane between Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, SE and South Capitol Street, SE
• Howard Road, SE single left or right lane and sidewalk between Firth Sterling Avenue, SE and Suitland Parkway, SE

The following lanes, ramp, and shoulder closures will be in place nightly from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am, Sunday, November 11, 2018, through Saturday, November 17, 2018, weather permitting.

• I-295 northbound single left or right lane between Laboratory Road / US Naval Research Lab (Exit 1) and Malcolm X Avenue / JBAB (Exit 2)
• I-295 northbound two left or two right lanes between Malcolm X Avenue / JBAB (Exit 2) to I-695 (Exit 5A)
• DC 295 southbound single right lane between East Capitol Street and I-695 (Exits 1B-C)
• I-295 southbound two left or right lanes between I-695 (Exits 1B-C) and South Capitol Street / Malcolm X Avenue / JBAB (Exit 2)
• I-295 southbound single left or right lane between South Capitol Street / Malcolm X Avenue / JBAB (Exit 2) and US Naval Research Lab / DC Water / Blue Plains (Exit 1)
• South Capitol Street, SE/SW single left or right lane between Firth Sterling Avenue, SE and N Street, SE
• Suitland Parkway, SE two right lanes or two left lanes between Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, SE and South Capitol Street, SE
• Firth Sterling Avenue, SE single left or right lane between South Capitol Street, SE and Howard Road, SE
• Howard Road, SE single left or right lane and sidewalk between Firth Sterling Avenue, SE and Suitland Parkway, SE
• I-295 northbound off-ramp to eastbound Suitland Parkway / JBAB (Exit 3A). Signed detour will be in place for closure.
• I-295 northbound off-ramp to westbound South Capitol Street / Nationals Park / Downtown (Exit 3B). Signed detour will be in place for closure.
• I-295 northbound on-ramp from eastbound Suitland Parkway, SE. Signed detour will be in place for closure.
• I-295 northbound on-ramp from northbound Firth Sterling Avenue, SE. Signed detour will be in place for closure.
• I-295 southbound off-ramp to Howard Road / Nationals Park (Exit 4B). Signed detour will be in place for closure.
• I-295 southbound off-ramp to Suitland Parkway / US Naval Station (Exit 4A). Signed detour will be in place for closure.
• I-295 southbound on-ramp from eastbound Suitland Parkway, SE. Signed detour will be in place for closure.

The following lane and shoulder closures will be in place during the weekend from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, Saturday, November 17, 2018 weather permitting.

• I-295 northbound single left lane or right lane between Laboratory Road (Exit 1) and Suitland Parkway (Exit 3A)

Additionally, Q Street, SW between Half Street, SW and South Capitol Street, SW as well as Half Street, SW between Potomac Avenue, SW and Q Street, SW has been closed for an extended period. Detours are provided, and local access maintained.

These closures are required for construction activities associated with the following DDOT projects:

South Capitol Street Corridor Project - Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge

The South Capitol Street Corridor Project calls for replacing the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge and transforming related sections of the urban freeway into a beautiful scenic boulevard that increases pedestrian and vehicular safety, improves multimodal transportation options, increases community accessibility and supports economic development on both sides of the Anacostia River.

I-295 / Malcolm X Avenue SE Interchange Improvement Project

The multiple phases of this project include the reconstruction of the I-295 interchange with Malcolm X Avenue SE, including modified ramps and a new access roadway to the St. Elizabeth’s West Campus. The planned improvements will be made between Firth Sterling Avenue SE, on the north, and the South Capitol Street/Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue SE intersection to the south. The project will provide transportation improvements to serve the proposed Department of Homeland Security headquarters consolidation on the St. Elizabeth’s West Campus.

Rehabilitation of Anacostia Freeway Bridges over Nicholson St, SE
The District Department of Transportation project to rehabilitate the Anacostia Freeway bridges over Nicholson St, SE is part of DDOT’s ongoing commitment to safety. The rehabilitation project will focus on reconstruction of the bridge deck and adjoining ramps to address deteriorating structural elements, ensuring that each bridge remains a reliable part of our infrastructure.

Motorists are urged to use caution as they travel in these areas, to anticipate moderate delays, and to be mindful construction personnel.
