WASHINGTON, DC -- The White House hosted dance icons Debbie Allen, Virginia Johnson, Fatima Robinson and Judith Jamison this week as part of a Black History Month celebration.

The dance legends taught a master class in African dance to 51 girls from Washington, D.C.
The theme of Black History Month at the White House this year is “Honoring the Past While Celebrating the Present; 7 Years of Living African American History.” As part of this celebration, First Lady Michelle Obama highlighted the contributions African American women have made to dance by hosting a day-long dance workshop for local students.

The First Lady welcomed the 51 D.C. students to the White House, where they worked with iconic leaders in dance, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s Jamison, Allen, the Dance Theatre of Harlem’s Virginia Johnson, and Hip-Hop choreographer Robinson.
The First Lady delivered remarks and introduced the student presentation. As a culmination of the workshops, the young dancers told the story of African American history and culture through dance. Watch a video of Obama’s remarks and the performance here:
