Virtual Lecture 'Enslaved At The Georgetown Hotel' On Sept. 22

The lecture highlights 3 generations of relatives held as slaves by the owner of the Georgetown Hotel, known now as City Tavern Club.

GEORGETOWN, D.C. — Residents can learn more about three generations of relatives held as slaves by the owner of the Georgetown Hotel, known now as City Tavern Club, on Sept. 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The virtual lecture, Enslaved at the Georgetown Hotel, walks residents through the historical timeline of the family members who were emancipated in 1862 under the DC Compensated Emancipated Act.

The presentation will be led by Yvette LaGonterie, who retired from a lengthy federal career where she held senior positions in immigration, international affairs and homeland security. She also is an avid family historian and discovered the link between the family members and the hotel. The Georgetown Hotel and now City Tavern Club is in one of the oldest Federal style buildings in D.C.

Participants will be sent a link to Zoom with instructions, meeting ID and password via email one day before the event.
