Washington Teachers’ Union Files Complaint Against DCPS

GEORGETOWN, DC — Last week, the Washington Teachers’ Union filed a complaint against D.C. Public Schools claiming that the school system "violated health and safety protocols at a high school where a teacher recently died after contracting the coronavirus."

According to DCist, the union alleges that the district did not inform students and staff members about a positive COVID-19 case at Ballou STAY Opportunity Academy in Ward 8 in a "timely manner." Helen M. White, a cosmetology teacher, died after contracting the coronavirus, union president Elizabeth Davis disclosed. The school system did not tell students in White’s class she had fallen ill and waited 11 days to notify the school community that someone at the school had tested positive, the DCist reported.

City health officials stated that the teacher was not in close contact with anyone at the school, DCist shared.
