19 DC Restaurants Named Michelin Bib Gourmand Favorites

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Each year the Michelin Guide designates its picks for the Bib Gourmand lineup — a listing of some of the best food $40 can buy. The 2019 guide includes 19 restaurants from The District.

The guide book, which is expected Sept. 17, includes a restaurant, DC's Maydan, which was recently named the nation's No. 2 new restaurant in Bon Appétit's top 50 roundup. This means, however, that Maydan won't be eligible for a Michelin Star this year.

Three new restaurants are joining the Bib Gourmand list, Eater Washington reports: Fancy Radish, a vegan restaurant; Joselito Casas de Comidas, a Spanish-themed tapas bar; and Kaliwa. More-established restaurants also rose to the Bib Gorumand ranks this year, including Ambar and Toki Underground.

“In the inaugural edition of the Guide, our team found 19 restaurants that really impressed,” Michael Ellis, international director of the Michelin Guide, said in a statement. “After two years, these restaurants were consistently impressive, and we uncovered nearly twice as many to join their ranks.”

To be eligible for Bib Gourmand status, restaurants must serve two courses and provide wine or dessert for less than $40, Time reports.
