2016 Race4Respect 5K: Major Road Closures in DC This Weekend, Here's Where to Avoid

Thousands of runners will be descending on the National Mall this Saturday to raise awareness for Down syndrome, and that means huge road closures.

The Memorial Day weekend may be over, but the National Mall in the summer is always a busy place, and this weekend is no exception. The Race4Respect 5K and 1K "kid's dash" will start at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 4 and last until around 11:30 a.m., which will result in closing a number of streets, including sections of Pennsylvania Avenue, Constitution Avenue, Independence Avenue and 3rd to 14th streets during that time, according to a Metropolitan Police Department statement.

Pennsylvania Avenue between 10th and 14th streets NW and 13th Street between E Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW will be closed from 2 a.m. until 1 p.m. that day.

Race4Respect is a collaborative project led by devenio, inc. in collaboration with eight Down syndrome affiliate groups from Baltimore, Md. to Richmond, Va.

"Join us to run the most coveted 5K course in the DC metro area," the site states. "Run in the shadow of the nation's capital, the Washington Monument and many other prime DC treasures."

The following streets will be closed for site set up at approximately 2:00 am until 1:00 pm:

• Pennsylvania Avenue, Northwest, between 10th Street NW and 14th Street NW
• 13th Street, Northwest, between E Street NW and Pennsylvania Ave. NW

The race start time will be from 9:30 am to 11:30 am, at which time the following streets will be closed:
