WASHINGTON, DC — Homicide detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department are investigating three shooting incidents that took place since Friday, leaving three people dead and one injured, according to police releases. "I've learned that Ms. Lucas has raised a large family on her own, previously worked as an assistant nurse and was a great grandmother," Newsham said, during a Tuesday morning press briefing. "She tragically lost her life trying to break up a dispute that involved one of her granddaughters."
According to Newsham, the dispute originated inside a Giant grocery store and the shooting occurred down the block from the store.
"We believe that the decedent, Ms. Lucas, was responding because one of her grandchildren was involved in that dispute," he said. "We're obviously going to do everything we can. I'm absolutely sure that someone out there has information relative to what happened in the Giant and then afterwards. We're piecing that together."
Police also found a second victim, an adult male, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
"We're going to continue to ask the community's assistance with this case," Newsham said. "We understand that there were several witnesses out there at the time and anyone that has information we've asked them to step forward."
On Sunday, around 1:25 a.m., officers from the Seventh District responded to the report of a shooting in the 1800 block of Gainesville St., S.E. They found an unconscious male suffering from gunshot wounds. D.C. Fire and EMS determined the victim showed no signs of life and pronounced him dead on the scene. MPD identified the deceased victim as Kayvon Kinney, 26, of Southeast. Kinney was later taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
"We believe that an argument preceded this event," Newsham said. "And we believe this was over a petty dispute that resulted in this 26-year old losing his life."
MPD asks anyone with information about any of these cases to call 202-727-9099 or submit anonymous information to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by sending a text message to 50411.
