45,000 Say They'll Attend Massive 'Thanks, Obama' Party in DC
The Blind Whino's party in Southwest has gone viral, and it could lead to logistics challenges.

WASHINGTON, DC — A party scheduled for Inauguration Day Eve aimed at thanking President Barack Obama for his work after eight years in office has blown up on Facebook, with 126,000 indicating they are interested and 45,000 saying they were going as of Tuesday morning.
It's doubtful the "Thanks, Obama" party will draw those numbers, but even a fraction of that figure would be an absolutely massive turnout. The party is planned for the SW Arts Club -- also known as the Blind Whino -- at 700 Delaware Avenue SW.
And the venue is definitely not built to handle that kind of crowd. The Blind Whino is a refurbished and repainted church that serves as a showcase for art exhibitions.

"We will gather and celebrate this truly amazing President on the last day of his presidency," the event's Facebook page states. "We will have music, art, and performances in his honor. This is a way we can truly and sincerely say, 'Thanks, Obama.'"
The event is scheduled to run from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19, the day before huge crowds will descend on the National Mall for Donald Trump's inauguration as president.

The name of the event is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the perceived tendency of Obama's opponents to blame every problem on him, even the most mundane and superficial problems in their lives.
The event was started by two graduates of Spelman College in Atlanta, Bejidé Davis and Amanda Washington Lockett.

Meanwhile, a video tribute to Obama posted by the White House has exploded on social media, and has more than 3 million views as of Tuesday morning. The video, posted Jan. 5, features "Americans and people around the world reflect[ing] on moments that meant the most to them," the video description states.
