$5 Capital Bikeshare Memberships? DC Unveils New Program

Annual memberships are super cheap in D.C., if you meet a few qualifications.

Good news: now you can get an annual membership to Capital Bikeshare for just $5, if you meet the requirements.

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced April 13 that it is introducing the Capital Bikeshare Community Partners Program to improve access to Capital Bikeshare by offering it at a much lower price, according to a DDOT statement.

Now, District residents who are receiving need-based services can get an annual membership for just $5.

DDOT Director Leif A. Dormsjo said that it was vital that residents have access to more affordable transportation, and officials hope this new program will do exactly that.

"It is critical that those with the most need are able to travel quickly and economically to and from their appointments, jobs, training and classes," Dormsjo said in the statement. "By including need-based Capital Bikeshare annual memberships, we are ensuring that all District residents can use this healthy, affordable and efficient means of travel."

There are currently six Capital Bikeshare Community Partner Program participants: Back on My Feet DC, DC Dept. of Human Services, Unity Health DC, Whitman-Walker Health, Community of Hope and the DC Center for the LGBT Community.

These organizations will be able to offer their clients these reduced memberships, which include a 60 minute ride time per trip (it's only 30 minutes for regular memberships), a free helmet, instructions for using the system and cycling classes from the Washington Area Bicycling Association.
