Perfecting Timelessness with Jack Boul

Jack Boul, known as the "dean of the Washington printmakers," is exhibiting his latest work this month.

Notable local Artist Jack Boul, known as the “dean of the Washington printmakers,” will be exhibiting his latest work in October at the historic Arts Club of Washington at 2017 I (Eye) Street, NW.

Works by Boul have been acquired by the National Gallery of Art and the Phillips Collection. Boul’s paintings, sculptures and monoprints have been exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Mint Museum of Charlotte, N.C. In the coming months, he will also be part of a group show in Paris.

“What I love about Jack’s work is the intimacy of it,” said Dr. Erik Denker, curator of the show and senior lecturer and head of tours and lectures at the National Gallery of Art.

“His work has a timeless quality to it,” said Denker. “There is a pause, a breadth of scope in the hard edges, while the images remain definable and serene.”

At age 92, Boul can be found most days working on his gentle and nostalgic oil paintings and prints in his Bethesda home studio where he lives with his wife of 72 years, Vivian.

“There’s a lot to look forward to,” Boul said. “Creating works of art is my reason for living. It keeps me alive.”

His exhibit of monotypes, oil paintings and sculpture at the Arts Club will run from October 4–27.
