Assault Charge Upgraded To 2nd Degree Murder In 2019 Homicide
Metropolitan Police Department detectives charged a Southeast man in the 2019 shooting death of Leon Williams, 52, of Northeast.

WASHINGTON, DC — A Southeast man who was already charged with assault for a 2019 shooting incident is now facing a murder charge for the same crime, according to a Metropolitan Police Department release.
Daquan Brooks, 23, of Southeast, was arrested and charged with assault with intent to kill on Aug. 5, 2019, in connection with the shooting of Leon Williams, 52, of Northeast.
Around 2:52 p.m., on July 30, Brooks and Williams were involved in a dispute in the 3rd Street Tunnel near Massachusetts Avenue, Northwest, when Brooks shot the other man and fled the scene. Williams was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries.

Williams succumbed to his injuries on Oct. 22, 2020. After performing an autopsy, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined complications from gunshot wounds caused Williams' death and the manner of his death was ruled a homicide
Acting on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant Wednesday, Brooks was taken to the Homicide Branch where the charges against him were upgraded to second degree murder while armed.
